ADVANCES IN AUTONOMOUS NAVIGATION FOR ROBOTS IN ASSISTED LIVING

Hiram Ponce, Ernesto Moya-Albor and Jorge Brieva, researchers at the School of Engineering published the article “A Novel Artificial Organic Control System for Mobile Robot Navigation in Assisted Living Using Vision-and Neural-Based Strategies” in the international journal Computational Intelligence and Neuroscience (JCR indexing):

In this work, the researchers present a new nature-inspired control system for mobile robots in assisted living. The proposal uses an artificial organic controller enhanced with vision-based strategies and a distance inference unit using a convolutional neural network. Using a single camera, the system determines the distance of the objects and allows the robot to evade obstacles and navigate freely.
