Born in 1950. Studies at the École Normale Supérieure in Paris, Paris- Sorbonne and Lille. ,I am currently a tenured research professor in the School of Philosophy at the Universidad Panamericana in Mexico City; formerly SNI Level II, then Level III, between 2013 and 2024. Previously, I had a chair in Greek and Ancient Philosophy at the University of Lille, Paris-Sorbonne, and Princeton University. I am an honorary member of the Institut Universitaire de France. I have been a visiting professor at the Universities of Michigan, Lausanne, and Princeton; I was a fellow at the Center for Hellenic Studies in Washington, the Wissenschaftskolleg in Berlin, the Seeger Center for Hellenic Studies, the Center for Humanities at Princeton, and the Max Planck Institute for the History of Science in Berlin. At the Universidad Panamericana, I spearheaded the creation of the Master’s program in Ancient Philosophy. I have edited, co-edited, and authored approximately twenty books, among which stand my French book on the concept of “Presocratic philosophy” (2006)—which has been translated into several languages (Spanish, Portuguese, English, and Chinese)— my latest book on Plato’s Laws (2022) and the nine-volume co-edition with Glenn W. Most on early Greek philosophy in nine volumes in the Loeb Library series published by Harvard University Press in 2016 (also available in French as a single volume from Fayard), the second revised and expanded edition of which is scheduled for publication in December 2027. I have authored over 200 articles, in which I have explored various aspects of ancient philosophy across its different thinkers and periods, as well as its reception by modern and contemporary authors. My main international connections and collaborations include the Sorbonne (Paris 1 and Paris 4), the École des Hautes Études en Sciences Sociales, and Princeton University.
