UP student wins medal in Computer Science Olympiad

Aguascalientes, Ags., November 28th, 2022.- Our student Fernanda Sarahí Mancilla Núñez from Mechatronics Engineering won a silver medal at the European Girls' Olympiad in Computer Science in its 2022 edition that took place in Turkey.

The disciple of the Panamericana went to this competition with the aim of being at the top and demonstrate to those present the quality of students in Mexico, as well as the ability that she herself has and has developed for a long time.

Computer Olympiad

The European Girls' Olympiad in Computer Science is an international competition where participants solve challenging algorithmic problems that seeks to promote STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) skills in women, as well as to increase the number of girls interested in areas of computer science.

His skills do not come by chance or without any effort, although he does have innate mathematical qualities, it is evident; but all his abilities come from solving problems and working under pressure several times in this type of competitions, which gives him the experience he needs. It's a habit he's been working on for a few years now, and now it's bearing fruit by being able to think deeply, while bearing the weight of the intimidation of being in a world competition. All this despite her young age.

Breaking paradigms

"She has participated in these events since she was a child," says Ricardo Abel Espinosa Loera, head of the Artificial Intelligence Department. "During most of her childhood, this student has broken paradigms that exist within the country . And this has happened in several stages, since she was the first girl to represent Mexico in the [International Informatics Olympiad], so we can see the experience she has had for many years and that she has demonstrated with results when she goes to these events and represents our institution".

The Mechatronics student has excelled by far and, despite not studying Artificial Intelligence, her ability in these subjects is undeniable. In computer science she represented the country and won the silver medal in this Olympiad. She traveled to Turkey and, in this country very far from ours, she fulfilled the expectations we had of her at the university. She even exceeded them.

Ricardo explains that, "this Olympiad is one of the few competitions that Unesco endorses, and, within this, the stages vary: there is the state phase, then comes the national phase and, finally, the international phase. Fernanda went through all these stages and excelled in each one of them". This made it possible for her to join the delegation, having been invited precisely because of her achievements.

He represented our country and left the name of our institution, and of the homeland as well, on high. He is only in his third semester of college and, as a student, he has already left us this example that everything is possible with a good preparation. Placing the country on a podium is achievable. She has done it and teaches us that we should support her and follow the example she sets.
