Data & Analytics in the entertainment industry

Mexico City, December 7, 2022.- The Business Intelligence (BI) degree from the School of Business at Universidad Panamericana, held an event to bring students closer to learn about Data & Analytics in the entertainment industry, during which we had the opportunity to talk with Rodrigo Esquivel Salazar, Senior Manager of Revenue Analytics and Data Management at Televisa Univision.

Soccer and data analysis?

Rodrigo, who has 12 years of experience, works with Televisa Univision's commercial vice-presidency and is part of the commercial area of advertising content sales. He explains that soccer in general, as well as any sport, is directly related to data analysis for audience measurement and business model planning, although it might not seem so.

"It is very important to understand everything that is behind a sporting event, a soccer team or a sports league (...); data plays a very important role, because through data we can understand the impact that sport can have, in the case of our industry, on the television side and the impact it can have on our audiences."

He also points out that " data analysis is fundamental to measure the impact of a business; if you don't have a basis, a data, a history, if you don't have a direction or if you only have it in a theoretical way, you really don't know where the business is going (...)".

"The truth is that data gives you the foundations you need to know where you stand, where you can move, how you can plan (...). Data does not lie, so when you have data, the truth cannot be debated against it", he affirms.

Business Intelligence in the enterprise

Rodrigo believes that more and more companies and businesses are valuing Business Intelligence graduates: "(...) they are demanding BI experts, they are realizing the importance of having people who know about data, who can implement data systems in an organization, who know how to manage them and who know not only how to have them, but also how to analyze them and make decisions focused on data (...)".

"In a changing and very competitive world, there are more and more demands from customers and less margin for error for the organization. It is important that decisions can be made quickly, agilely and effectively, and data helps a lot to ensure that decisions can be made in this way," he says.

He also states: "I highly recommend this career to students because it is in great demand and in an organization a data area, or a business intelligence area, has an immediate, measurable and much sought after impact by companies".

Advice to future graduates

Rodrigo took the opportunity to give future BI graduates some specific advice: "Always seek to learn more, not only about the company you are in or the business you are in, but also learn from your competitors, see what is happening outside the market and not only in Mexico, but what is happening in other countries, what are the trends that are setting the direction of the market, the economy, the industry where you are or where to go.

"(...) it is very important to plan for the long term and seek to focus their professional careers and life plans based on where they want to go, what they like, what they know, what they can apply," he said.

He also reminded that "it is important that in what they do they try to contribute value, beyond a monetary value or economic value to the organizations, but an additional value to society".

He also concluded on the importance of having a social impact and seeking congruence with one's own values: "Seek from your trench, from the part in which you are working, to contribute to the maximum in your area, to contribute to the maximum in the organization and always in a congruent way and acting with values and congruence with what you are doing".
