Mexico City, November 18, 2022.— The Colibrí Space Laboratory, part of the Universidad Panamericana, and its flagship project, Pakal, were selected as the winners of the 2022 ILAN University Innovation Award, in recognition of the effort, determination, hard work, and persistence required to bring a high-level university project with a social focus to fruition.
The ILAN Innovation Awards are presented by the Israel + Latin American Network Foundation to recognize and promote innovation in Mexico and Latin America, and are awarded to change-makers who dare to transform and improve existing systems and realities. Now in its third year, the call for entries was opened to university projects for the first time.

More Opportunities for Colibrí
The Shimon Peres Award was presented to Dr. Santiago García Álvarez, president of our Panamericana University, by Isaac Assa, founder and president of the ILAN Foundation.

“We are proud to celebrate another edition of the ILAN Innovation Awards and to continue recognizing not only the work of Mexican companies, which excel day after day, but also university projects through innovative ideas,”Assa said.
This award will provide Laboratorio Espacial Colibrí the opportunity to gain greater visibility and participate in ILAN-affiliated forums at the national and international levels.

About Pakal
Pakal, from the Colibrí Space Laboratory, is a miniaturized CubeSat—also known as a 3-unit CubeSat nanosatellite— designed by undergraduate students at the Universidad Panamericana.
Its mission is to measure changes in atmospheric density in low Earth orbit, with the aim of advancing tracking and navigation sciences, thereby contributing to efforts to mitigate space debris and test innovative space technology.
