Cybersecurity, a necessity

Cybersecurity is a necessity in Mexico that must be part of companies, academia, the private and public sector, since the digital habitat is increasingly difficult to protect due to the wide variety of threats and the volatile environment, because an attack or risk situation is rarely similar.

On the operational side of cybersecurity Julian Garrido, General Director of MNEMO Mexico, commented: "it is very important to have a digital hygiene, awareness of the need for protection and cybersecurity, as well as cooperation between different areas. Discipline is the key to ensure cybersecurity".

Staffing shortages and gender gap

Regarding the issue of the deficit of qualified profiles within the sector, it was mentioned that worldwide there are 4.19 million vacancies in cybersecurity, however, human talent is scarce. In our country this problem is being addressed directly from the universities through the modification and adaptation of the curricular maps to train the professionals demanded by the market.

Another major challenge in cybersecurity is the gender gap. Globally, only 25% of women represent the human talent at the forefront of cybersecurity, according to data from a study by WOMCY (LATAM Women in Cybersecurity), which predicts that by 2030 this percentage will increase by 5%.

"In 2018 we had an enrollment of 16% of women in technology careers and by 2022 we have 26%; women are increasing their participation in this area, now they are the ones leading projects and trainings," explained Victoria Carreras, Director of Data Intelligence and Cybersecurity Engineering at Panamericana.

Digital skills

Speaking about the technological vision Fernando Indech, Costumer Engineer Security and Compliance Specialist at Google said: "it is necessary to understand cybersecurity in a natural way, that is to say, to know that it is a process that includes several facets: detection time of threats, alerts and vulnerabilities".

"The challenge is to make it more accurate; remediation time, in the shortest possible time, in which automation plays a very important role in resolving errors and to deal with threats; lastly, to be more resilient," he added.

The technology leaders stressed that equipping human capital with digital skills is the key to adapting to new needs. "With these resources we will have the ability to change and make a more cybersecure digital space. Efficient processes, technology and talent are the key factors to ensure security in the digital environment," concluded Yair Lelis, Cybersecurity Regional Leader at CISCO.
