D-Day!

With the objective of promoting the Culture of Disability, through awareness-raising activities, we seek to raise awareness about what it is like to live with a disability, in order to achieve an inclusive experience full of empathy.

"This year we have focused on raising awareness about activities of daily life, which we sometimes perform mechanically and without being aware of performing them, such as walking, communicating, going to the store to buy something, crossing a street, speaking, etc. With these activities we intend to help experience and raise awareness about the challenges and needs of people with disabilities," said Ms. Ana Karina Flores, coordinator of Social Commitment.

The event was attended by more than 250 people, all members of the university community, who participated in a circuit that began with:

  • Rolling in a wheelchair up and down a ramp.
  • The "banco" where we learned how a blind person identifies the denomination of a bill. In Mexico, banknotes have different sizes so that a visually impaired person can know their denomination.
  • A high counter, where awareness was raised about people with short stature and how they can access a counter and buy a hamburger, for example.
  • "Bigfoot," a blind person and a deaf person had to manage to communicate to team up and move in unison to get to the other side.
  • Podotactile guidance and how to help a visually impaired person to walk, cross a street, find their way around, etc.
  • The final track was about hearing impairment and Mexican Sign Language (LSM), one of the most widely used forms of communication among the hearing impaired.
