Evandro Agazzi: first Professor Emeritus of UP

Mexico City, May 3, 2022.- National Professor Emeritus is the highest rank granted by the Council of the National System of Researchers (SNI) of the National Council of Science and Technology (CONACYT), which in our Universidad Panamericana, so far, has only been achieved by one researcher: Dr. Evandro Agazzi.

According to CONACYT, the title of National Professor Emeritus is only awarded to researchers who have demonstrated an outstanding career in their area of expertise, in which they have made fundamental contributions to the generation of new scientific, humanistic or technological knowledge, which has allowed them to achieve national and international recognition and prestige.

Likewise, it is sought that those who receive such appointment have participated in the formation of new generations of students and researchers and have stood out in the country for their participation in the creation and development of any of Mexico's academic institutions or research centers. In this sense, Dr. Agazzi fulfills each requirement.

About Dr. Agazzi

Born in Bergamo, Italy, Dr. Agazzi is also a Mexican citizen since 2001, which is why he explains: "I feel proudly Mexican". He holds a PhD in Philosophy from the Catholic University of Milan and has studies in several areas, such as Physics and Formal Logic, and postgraduate studies in Philosophy of Science at Oxford, England.

He has a solid teaching experience, teaching subjects such as Higher Geometry, Complementary Mathematics, Mathematical Logic, Symbolic Logic, Philosophy of Science and Bioethics. Currently, he is a professor at our Panamericana, where he directs the Interdisciplinary Center for Bioethics and the journal Bioethics UPdate.

His main lines of research are general philosophy of science, philosophy of some particular sciences (mathematics, physics, social sciences), ethics of science, philosophical anthropology and bioethics.

In his curriculum there is an extensive and solid publication list of more than 100 books as author or co-editor and around 1,000 published articles, his works have been translated into nine languages.

In addition, he is Professor Emeritus at the universities of Fribourg (Switzerland) and Genoa (Italy) and holds 12 honorary doctorates from various universities around the world, just to mention a few of his many credentials.

A life dedicated to research

Dr. Agazzi admits that while recognition for his work brings satisfaction, he points out that it cannot be the driving force for any researcher, just as it is certainly not his motivation: "When one is engaged in research, the motivation is practically the search for something important.

For him, the most relevant aspect of the highest appointment he holds today is the fact that it serves as an example for other researchers or young people inclined towards research to realize that, if they have passion for what they do, they can go far and consolidate their goals.

"It is very important that each person sees the possibility of going further, making an effort, without this implying that if you don't achieve what you set out to do, you feel frustrated," he says.

In the exercise of research, the doctor indicates that the synergy that exists in the university between teaching and research is of great value, because "you cannot teach something that you do not know".

In the same way, he specifies that there is a social responsibility in research and teaching "because we all live depending on each other and this pandemic has taught us that no one is saved alone (...)".

So it is important that researchers from all branches work together to enrich their findings: "I have worked in the field of the foundations of mathematics, I have produced results in mathematical logic, artificial intelligence, which were later taken up by American researchers," he says.

Dr. Agazzi is currently finishing writing another of his many books and emphasizes that he has no plans to stop researching: "(...) inside me there is always this satisfaction to keep thinking and keep producing, reading the comments and discussing", he concludes.
