Over the course of these two weeks, national and international experts analyzed the main legal, technological, and economic challenges facing the sports industry, one of the sectors with the highest growth and greatest impact worldwide.

Intellectual Property and Sports: A Strategic Sector for Innovation

The purpose of the course was to explore in depth the relationship between intellectual property and sports, addressing topics such as:

  • Sports brands.
  • Copyright.
  • Patents.
  • Licensing.
  • Marketing of Intangible Assets.
  • Legal Protection for Sporting Events and Organizations.

Through lectures and panel discussions, participants learned how protecting innovation and intangible assets strengthens the economic and competitive development of the sports industry.

Case Studies and International Participation

During the conference, participants analyzed cases related to the protection of intellectual property rights in sports, as well as ambush marketing strategies, particularly in the context of international competitions such as the World Cup.

These studies helped participants understand the challenges that brands and organizers face in safeguarding their assets and ensuring fair competition.

The course drew approximately 694 participants across both in-person and virtual formats. Each day, there were between 70 and 80 participants at the physical venues and between 500 and 600 attendees connected online, reflecting the growing interest in intellectual property as it applies to sports and innovation.

Academic collaboration that strengthens interdisciplinary education

Among the activities held at the “ Universidad Panamericana ” was a panel discussion titled “The New Federal Law on the Protection of Industrial Property (LFPPI): Progress and Challenges,” during which experts analyzed the opportunities and challenges presented by the current legal framework for protecting innovation, creativity, and technological development in Mexico.

The closing ceremony was led by Viviana Huerta García, M.A., Division Director of International Relations at IMPI, and Dr. Santiago García Álvarez, president of the Universidad Panamericana Mexico City campus.

In her remarks, Viviana Huerta García, M.A., emphasized the importance of students and young professionals understanding the strategic value of intellectual property.

“The goal is to open our eyes to intellectual property, so that as students or young professionals we can view it through a different lens, since its purpose is to drive innovation. The countries that achieve development, growth, and shared prosperity are those that innovate and protect.”

For his part, Dr. Santiago García Álvarez emphasized that academic gatherings such as this one foster collaborative relationships among specialists from different sectors.

“These types of forums represent an opportunity not only in the academic sphere, but also foster the development of valuable professional networks. It is extremely enriching to talk with people from different industries, share ideas, and engage in high-level networking, he said.

Through initiatives such as the course on Intellectual Property and Sports, the Universidad Panamericana reaffirms its commitment to training professionals capable of meeting the challenges of innovation, creativity, and the knowledge economy.

Through partnerships with international organizations such as WIPO, national institutions such as IMPI, and prestigious universities, Panamericana continues to foster opportunities for academic dialogue, international cooperation, and specialized professional development that strengthen research, the protection of innovation, and the development of talent with a global impact.
