Dr. Diana Pacheco Álvarez is a biologist with a Ph.D. in Medical Sciences from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), and she completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Salvador Zubirán National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition. She currently serves as a professor and researcher at the School of Medicine of the University of the State of San Luis Potosí ( Universidad Panamericana), where she coordinates the Molecular Biology laboratory, teaches courses in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, and serves as a member of the Research and Biosafety Committees of the Faculty of Health Sciences.
His research focuses on the study of the regulatory mechanisms of ion transporters, with an emphasis on the Na-Cl cotransporter (NCC), as well as on the role of WNK3 kinase in cellular signaling processes, cell volume control, and ionic homeostasis. These lines of research have direct implications for understanding conditions such as high blood pressure, kidney disorders, and neurological disorders, integrating approaches from molecular biology, cell physiology, and translational medicine.
Among his most notable contributions is the article “WNK3 and WNK4 exhibit opposite sensitivity with respect to cell volume and intracellular chloride concentration,” published in the *American Journal of Physiology – Cell Physiology* (2020). This study provides evidence regarding the differential regulation of WNK kinases in response to changes in cell volume and intracellular chloride concentration, thereby making a significant contribution to our understanding of the molecular mechanisms that modulate the activity of ion transporters relevant to renal pathophysiology.
In the field of human resources training, Dr. Pacheco Alvarez has led and participated in research projects with at least 15 undergraduate medical students since 2008. She has also served as a co-advisor in graduate programs (master’s and doctoral) at CINVESTAV-IPN, actively contributing to the training of new researchers in the biomedical field.
His work is also distinguished by a strong network of collaborations, particularly with the Salvador Zubirán National Institute of Medical Sciences and Nutrition, where he is a member of the Molecular Physiology Unit.
In this interdisciplinary environment, he has carried out joint projects and co-authored numerous scientific publications, thereby strengthening a well-established line of research in renal physiology and molecular biology.
