During the meeting, Dr. Lerma explained to the master's students some of the issues to be put into practice as managers in educational institutions. Among the most relevant characteristics, he presented the following:

  1. Show values, which should guide our actions and decisions.
  2. Suggesting alternatives "If I give advice to a student or a professor, and the matter goes well, to a great extent the merit is mine, because I gave the advice, but if it goes badly, to a great extent the fault is mine", stated Dr. Lerma, for which he clarified: "It is advisable, as far as possible, to point out alternatives or let the person point out the alternatives, this will help him/her to reason", he clarified.
  3. The more a student or teacher is encouraged, the more involvement he/she will have in his/her study or work.
  4. Motivating achievement will help develop capabilities.
  5. Warn of deviations, in order to help improve in time.
  6. Appreciating results implies recognizing when something has been done well.

He also advised those present to be an example of honesty, which is the most powerful form of persuasion, and of good prestige, the most effective way to obtain attention, acceptance and trust, the latter according to Cicero. He also pointed out the relevance of avoiding any negative view of education, to ponder not only knowledge, but also attitudes and work.

Key characteristics of the educator

Other key characteristics that he pointed out during his talk were educational confidence, about which he added: "If I don't have confidence in my ability to educate, I will only spread distrust, uncertainty, doubt...". He added that confidence in education is necessary because education is a vehicle for changing people.

Likewise, he added that it is of great importance to have prestige and general culture and to spread joy, a feeling that "is the essential note of educational communication" and that has a lot to do with happiness, since "joys are the steps that lead us to happiness".

"Educating someone is like having a bird in my hand that, I can't squeeze too much because I'll suffocate it, nor open too much because it will fly away, it's a matter of tact . To know the tact I need to know the person or people I want to educate and thus give them the help they need," he stated.

Central principles of education

For the doctor, every education professional must keep in mind that education must broaden horizons and foster values. Likewise, they should know that its central principles are:

      • Person-centered
      • Adjuvant
      • Progressive
      • Permanent
      • Persuasive
      • Worthy of being loved

"Be like Don Quixote: an idealist who defends the highest values and goes around the world trying to remedy injustices," he said.

Personal improvement processes

At the same time, Lerma pointed out the importance of working on personal improvement, which involves:

      1. Know yourself: if you don't know yourself, you can't move forward.
      2. Understand yourself: like every human being you have qualities, but also many limitations.
      3. Accept yourself: don't deny yourself.
      4. Master yourself: don't let circumstances shape you.
      5. Surpass yourself: don't stay at the level you are at, go a little further than where you are.
      6. To possess oneself: whoever does not possess himself can never give himself away.

"When I help my personal fulfillment I help, at the same time, the social fulfillment and justice of the community," he concluded.
