Students at the National Institute of Technology ( Universidad Panamericana ) create an eco-friendly crusher to reuse concrete

Zapopan, Jalisco; July 1.—Students in the Architecture and Civil Engineering programs at the Guadalajara campus of theUniversidad Panamericana , developed an eco-friendly concrete crusher, an innovative project aimed at reducing construction waste and reusing materials such as pavers, bricks, and concrete in new applications.

The initiative was created by José Miguel García González, Jesús Emiliano Juárez Madera, Helena Ramírez Zaccaro, and María García Águila, sixth-semester students, as part of an academic project led by Dr. Francisco Moreno, who invited them to develop a proposal focused on innovation and sustainability.

“It all started because Professor Francisco Moreno gave us the chance to take a risk on this project, and we decided to go for it, the students explained.

An eco-friendly crusher to give concrete a second life

The goal of the project is to offer a sustainable alternative for managing construction waste using a machine capable of crushing concrete, pavers, bricks, stone, and other materials so they can be reused in the manufacture of new construction materials, such as pavers.

Unlike other industrial equipment, the shredder stands out for its practical and user-friendly design, as it can be powered by cordless motors, batteries, or even a drill, without requiring a permanent electrical connection.

This feature makes it easy to use in a variety of work environments and offers a low-cost solution for promoting the recycling of construction materials.

Innovation, Learning, and Teamwork

Building the prototype took months of planning, testing, and constant improvements. The team had access to a workshop provided by one of its members, where they built the machine and made the necessary adjustments until they had a functional device.

“It took a lot of organization and time, because we had to coordinate, get materials, and make sure everyone could contribute, they explained.

During the course of the project, the students faced technical challenges such as learning welding processes and reinforcing the machine's structure after identifying areas for improvement during the initial tests.

“There were times when we didn’t know how to weld, but we learned, and together we managed to get the project off the ground, they said.

Concrete Recycling for More Sustainable Construction

The crusher aims to reduce the amount of concrete that ends up as waste and promote the circular economy within the construction industry.

Although the students acknowledge that recycled material does not have the same strength as new gravel, they emphasize that it represents a viable alternative for various applications and contributes to the responsible use of resources.

“We’re looking to give concrete a second life and reuse it, even though we know it doesn’t have the same strength as new gravel,” they said.

In addition to technological development, the project helped strengthen skills such as collaborative work, problem-solving, and hands-on learning—skills that are fundamental to the professional training of architects and civil engineers.

“We learned a lot about supporting one another and solving problems together,” they concluded.

Although the team believes the prototype can still be improved by adding an electric motor, the crusher achieved its goal of demonstrating that it is possible to develop functional solutions for concrete recycling and the reduction of construction waste.

Through initiatives like this, the Universidad Panamericana reaffirms its commitment to technological innovation, sustainable engineering, and the training of professionals capable of developing solutions that contribute to environmental protection.
