Reflection on migration: ethics and human rights
Dr. Lopez Farjeat's lecture delved into key questions about migration: Are there any ethical criteria governing migration restrictions and controls?, y How to harmonize state sovereignty and self-determination with respect for human rights?
"Administrative and physical impediments to people moving freely from one country to another may have different rationales (logistical, political, racial, etc.), but the question we have not yet succeeded in resolving is whether we can formulate ethical arguments for their exclusion"said the academic.
The scholar stressed that, while States have the right to protect their borders, migration control practices often violate individual rights. He proposed three ethical-normative criteria based on the "ethics of recognition" of the German philosopher of the German philosopher Axel Honneth:
- Respect for human dignity.
- Protection of people's integrity.
- Rejection of stereotypes and elimination of prejudices.
These principles seek to define the ethical obligations of States towards migrants without eliminating borders or controls, but establishing a more humanitarian approach.
The master class was a sample of the type of discussions and lines of research that will be addressed in the PhD in Practical Philosophy and Applied Ethics.
