Faculty of Philosophy hosts Aristotle in the Americas workshop

Mexico City, February 10, 2025. The School of Philosophy of the Universidad Panamericana hosted the workshop Aristotle in the Americasworkshop, an international academic event of the Master's program in Ancient Philosophyheld January 17-19, in collaboration with Princeton University (United States), the University of Sao Paulo (Brazil) and the Universidad de los Andes (Colombia).

The main objective of this event was to exercise the skills of comprehension and analysis of Greek texts in a dialogic and collaborative environment. in a dialogic and collaborative environment. During the workshop, students from undergraduate to postdoctoral level, together with internationally renowned scholars, worked on the translation, discussion and interpretation of the first nine chapters of Aristotle's Poetics.

This exercise not only allowed participants to deepen their knowledge of the classic text, but also to interact with international peers and world-class experts, strengthening their academic and professional training.

An international collaborative event in philosophy

The Aristotle in the Americas workshop counted with the participation of leading institutions such as the National University of Colombiathe Federal University of Rio de Janeirothe Federal University of Rio de Janeiro, the Federal University of Sao Paulo and the Pontifical Catholic University of Sao Paulo, among others.among others.

Featured speakers included professors André Laks, María Elena García Peláez, David Lévystone, Marco Zingano, Hendrik Lorenz, Benjamin Morison, Carolina Araujo, Andrew Fordwho shared their knowledge and guided the discussions.

 

The reception of Poetics in Brazil and New Spain

The event concluded with the lecture The reception of Aristotle's Poetics in Brazilgiven by Dr. Fernando M. Ganzoni Dr. Fernando M. Ganzoni of the Federal University of Sao Paulo. In his lecture, Dr. Ganzoni explored how this text by Aristotle has been received historically in Brazil, the influences it has had and its reinterpretations over the centuries.

In addition, the reception of the Poetics in New Spain was discussed, highlighting the cultural and intellectual connections between the two territories.
