Aguascalientes, Ags. February 23rd, 2023.- Faculties of Engineering and Food Business Management of our Pan-American University Panamericana campus Aguascalientes, create synergy to develop projects in quality and food technology through Artificial Intelligence.

Sum of effort

The School of Engineering and the School of Food Business Management (DNA), have joined forces to integrate a project of Artificial Intelligence and food, where through the taking of photographs and computer vision can be analyzed in an automated, fast and more efficient way the quality of food.

The technical research team is made up of four people: Claudia Nallely Sánchez Gómez, professor and research secretary of the School of Engineering, Julieta Domínguez Soberanes, PhD and researcher in Food, and two eighth semester students of Artificial Intelligence Engineering: Samanta and Ulises.

Artificial Intelligence

The project consists of using artificial intelligence algorithms to detect the quality of raw materials for a company, where various areas of this discipline such as machine learning and computer vision are applied.

"Artificial intelligence means automating processes to make human life more efficient, for example, this process that we are going to promote is precisely the detection of quality in raw materials," says Samanta Gutiérrez.

"The idea is to solve a real problem in the food quality industry, since it is impossible for a person to manually or visually analyze tons of food, so the idea is to generate an automated process so that quality can be measured through computer vision and automatic learning," says Dr. Claudia Nallely.

"If you have these experiences with the industry since you are a student, it opens your vision to realize that you can generate companies, provide solutions . These are things that are not already done, it is an unexplored path, it is to begin to take steps and see what things can be proposed. What we do, we do not want it to remain only in documents, but to contribute with knowledge and research in the industry and that benefits the whole community in Mexico", he points out.

On the other hand, the expert in Food Technology, Julieta Domínguez, shares with us that "the Universidad Panamericana is generating multidisciplinary groups where each one of the researchers is an expert in some area; when it comes to mixing this, they contribute to the industry and this is what has characterized us for more than ten years", she informs.

Together, both PhDs have worked on CONACYT projects, where they take their ideas to companies and offer the food part along with the experience in artificial intelligence, which in turn has opened the door for students to join these companies and collaborate with them.
