Rogelio Guerrero, UP student world champion in mathematics

Aguascalientes, Ags., August 15, 2024.- Rogelio Guerrero Reyes won for the second consecutive year the gold medal at the International Mathematical International Mathematics Olympiad held in England. This semester he will begin his studies in Artificial Intelligence Engineering at Panamericana campus Aguascalientes.

A genius in mathematics

Rogelio has always shown a strong inclination for the world of mathematics, but it was not until he was 11 years old that he began to compete in mathematics olympiads at the state and national level. Little by little, his talent and discipline made him stand out in these competitions.

It was in 2022 when Rogelio qualified for the first time to be part of the Mexican math team, where only the six best high school students in the country represent Mexico at the world level. In this competition held in Oslo, Norway, he won the bronze medal.

Determined to achieve excellence in the next edition, Rogelio spent most of his time training intensively, as well as taking constant tests to prepare himself.

In 2023, the Mexican math team was invited to a summer math training camp in China, where the student had the opportunity to learn a lot both culturally and academically.

Once he finished his preparation, Rogelio participated again in that year's International Math Olympiad, which was held in Japan. Thanks to his effort and dedication, Rogelio won the gold medal for the first time.

"Having won my first gold medal was a very important achievement for me for which I was very happy and quite proud, I'm still quite happy about it. That was when I set the goal of being the first Mexican to win two golds in these Olympics," he declares proudly.

Having set the goal and working harder and harder, this year in the 65th edition of the International Mathematical Olympiad, Rogelio made history by winning the gold medal for the second year in a row.

"Many times you have a goal in front of you and you work hard; I put in a lot of hours because I was hoping to achieve this result. I feel quite happy as a person because I was able to focus on a goal and achieve it. I feel that I can go ahead and achieve all my goals," he stresses.

UP Pride

Over time, the areas of software, machine learning and code development captured his attention, which is why he chose Artificial Intelligence Engineering.

"I believe that studying Artificial Intelligence Engineering at Panamericana can open many doors for me, and I also believe that it is a career that has a lot of potential for the future," he says.

In addition, knowing the experiences and academic competitions that students from the School of Engineering have had abroad, Rogelio is very interested in being able to participate in the prestigious competition ICPC.
