ZAPOPAN, Jalisco; May 31, 2024.- The School of Communication of the Universidad Panamericana Campus Guadalajara held the second presentation of the Panthers Journalism Award for its Communication and Journalism students.
During the semester, the journalism students were developing various journalistic products focused on social, economic, political, cultural and sports issues of relevance in Jalisco. The categories included Interview, Chronicle, Photojournalism and Report. In total, 39 journalistic works competed in the four categories.
Federico Torres López, director of the Communication and Journalism program, said that "the Panteras Informativas clubhas been consolidating asa group of enthusiastic and capable journalism students with a high sense of belonging that allowed them to carry out the Panthers Award for the second time in its 2024 version.
Interview
Second semester student Carlos Cabrera won first place in this category after interviewing former Chivas player Fernando Quirarte.
"It was a reminder thatI have the potential and talent with me and that many times all I need to do is trust that I can do it. I hope to continue living these experiences for the rest of my career and continue creating these memories that I am sure will live forever in my heart," he shared.
In addition, Carlos Maza, a fourth semester student, received an honorable mention for interviewing former Chivas and Mexican National Team goalkeeper and current TUDN commentator, Oswaldo Sánchez.
Chronicle
For the second consecutive year, fourth semester student Edgar García won first place in the Chronicle with his work entitled "Magic and Occultism in the City Center".
"I am very happy to get this recognition. I think the other winners were well deserved, and I would even dare to say that they are at the height of something already professional. I am grateful to the UP for continuing to hold this type of events that help the journalistic training of students," he reflected.
Two honorable mentions were awarded in this category: Diego Alonso for his journalistic piece "Kobe Bryant: The legend that transcended the courts" and Esteban Serrano for his work "Carlos Tevez: Second Chances". Both are second semester students.
Photojournalism
Fourth semester student, Sebastian Garcia, won first place with his photographs taken at the Festival de la Luz in Guadalajara.
"I was very happy because photojournalism is a branch of journalismI was very happy because photojournalism is a branch of journalism that has caught my attention since I started taking the class with Vero (the photojournalism teacher). The truth is that I found it very cool to be able to capture everything I saw and represent it in a good way in the album I presented".
Paola García de la Rosa, a fourth-semester student, received an honorable mention after taking a series of photographs in the historic center of Zapopan.

Fourth semester student, Diana Salcedo, won first place with her work entitled "Fangirls, another joke of the patriarchal system".
"I dealt with a topic that I am very passionate about; beinga fangirl and belonging to several fan groups of different artists, I have realized that a woman who is a fan does not receive the same treatment as a male fan. While male soccer fans are called passionate, women are called crazy," she commented.
With respect to the recognition, Diana says that it was an experience that filled her with satisfaction, because it is the first report she has written since she entered the career. "I am also very grateful that the university has this kind of spaces and events where new journalistic talent can be discovered, which I believe there is plenty of among UP students.
Three honorable mentions were awarded in the Reportage category. Yannis Muñiz, sixth semester, was recognized for his written work "El fenómeno 'Presidente Maynez': Impacto de las redes sociales en los jóvenes electores"; Andrés Vázquez, sixth semester, for his audiovisual piece "Se cuadruplica la violencia en el Akron en el primer aniversario del FAN ID"; and Renata May, fifth semester, for her podcast "Secuela de la violencia contra menores".
Mtra. Paola Lizárraga, Head of the Journalism Academy and organizer of the event, is grateful to see the results of the students in this new edition of the Panteras Award. "It triggered the talent of the students to motivate them to generate new informative content, both in digital platforms and in traditional media", she affirmed.
The Universidad Panamericana Campus Guadalajara expresses its gratitude to the School of Communication for organizing the second edition of the Panther Journalism Award. It also thanks the members of the jury for evaluating the entries and congratulates the winning students for their effort and dedication in their respective journalistic pieces.
