The area of The Pedagogy Postgraduate Area of the Universidad Panamericana The Pedagogy Graduate Studies area of the University of Mexico held a conference in the auditorium of our university, in the company of colleagues from educational institutions, given by Dr. José Manuel Núñez Pliego. Dr. José Manuel Núñez Pliego, rector emeritus of the University of Mexico, held a conference in the auditorium of our house of studies.rector emeritus of Panamericana.
Importance of continuous training
During the opening of the event, Dr. Santiago García Álvarez, rector of the Mexico City campus, told those present: "We who are dedicated to this world as exciting as education, are always concerned about the training of our students and our teachers (...). But sometimes, it happens to us that we do not think about the training process itself."
"As managers, people in different educational institutions at the decision-making level, we also need these training processes. Sometimes we focus too much on training others, but we need to ask ourselves: how can I train myself better?
Quoting Carlos Llano, he enunciated a phrase that, in his experience, has served Pan American members well:"'You want to be more? Be better.(...) If we worry about our own consolidation, training and continuous improvement, we will end up achieving more goals than we set for ourselves," he said.
He also recalled: "(...) education is the best investment in the short, medium and long term, (...) what we do does not remain in a vacuum, it has an effect".
Putting the person at the center
The rector emeritus' lecture was entitled Management, between leadership and the person. He spoke about how to lead in the current situation of education, which is facing a pandemic and many changes.
"We have to be very clear about three things: objective, mission and where I am going; as well as resources, what means I have to work with to achieve what I have set out to do, and put people at the center, with whom I am going to achieve the purpose I have set out," said Núñez Pliego.
On what management entails, he explained: "The task of management is nothing more than articulating people so that they can pursue the objective we have set, giving them the resources they need to achieve what we have set out to do".
Regarding the institutional vision, he stated: "(...) I have to make that vision meaningful to all those who have a role to play in achieving it. It is not enough for me to be clear about where I want to go, it is necessary that the task of getting there is meaningful for the people who contact me (...)".
While on the task of managing others he revealed, "The only way for management between people to work is to establish trust, if there is no trust things don't happen."
Taking care of your team
He also emphasized: "A good leader is a good teacher, what makes a good teacher? It is the one who is concerned with the person and not with the task that the person has to perform. In other words, he is concerned with how to make the person better and not with how to get the person to do something".
Among the skills he named that a good leader must have are empathy and the ability to be relevant. He also shared an idea that he said is fundamental: "I cannot lead anything if I am not able to lead myself a little" .
"We urgently need people who are able to restructure an enthusiastic narrative of an educational project (...) What you do every day in the schools leaves indelible marks," he concluded.
