Zapopan, Jalisco; January 24, 2023.—Following the announcement of the new law banning smoking in public spaces, Panamericana is stepping up to the plate and seeking to implement responsible measures within its facilities through an effective program called “Acciones con ECO.”
Smoke-free areas
“Actions with ECO” is the action plan that aims to promote 100% smoke-free spaces on Panamericana campuses, thereby creating a healthier environment for the university community and the natural surroundings.
On January 15 of this year, the Federal Government of Mexico announced the areas where smoking tobacco and/or using electronic cigarettes is strictly prohibited, including: terraces, patios, parks, sports facilities, hotels, shopping malls, hospitals, schools, religious institutions, and even public transportation.

After it was revealed that cigarette smoke generates extremely high levels of greenhouse gases (GHGs) and that cigarette smokers produce approximately 225,000 tons of carbon dioxide each year, Panamericana launched the campaign “100% Smoke-Free Campus” which took effect on all its campuses in January 2020.
The reality today
Given the new reality we face as a nation—being the third-highest country in the Americas for youth smoking and the sixth-highest for adult smoking— the UP aims to bring about change through the initiatives mentioned above, with the goal of improving today’s statistics.
With initiatives such as “ECO Actions and 100% Smoke-Free Spaces,”Panamericana reaffirms its commitment as a socially responsible university to providing healthier spaces for its community.
