UP Alumni Around the World: A Network That Paves the Way for New Generations. Washington

A student’s international experience takes on special meaning when, far from home, they find a community willing to welcome them, share its experiences, and open up new perspectives. That is the strength of the UP Alumni Network.

During the International Week for undergraduate students in Government and Public Policy and Economics at the Universidad Panamericana in Washington, D.C., distinguished alumni and members of the UP community contributed to the students’ education through informal gatherings, conversations, and professional experiences.

Washington, a Hub for International Education

Washington, D.C., one of the world's leading centers for diplomacy, public policy, and multilateral organizations, became an ideal setting for strengthening students' international education and exposing them to various areas of professional development.

During an academic visit to Johns Hopkins University, 16 students, accompanied by Dean Dr. Claudia Robles, learned about the work of the Bloomberg Center for Public Innovation and spoke with professionals and UP alumni who have built careers at international organizations and institutions.

UP Alumni Who Share Their Professional Experiences

María Calderón, a law graduate and Senior Program Associate at the Inter-American Dialogue; Mariana Tejeida, a graduate in Business Administration and International Business and Program Officer at the Inter-American Development Bank; and Santiago Ginebra Campillo, president of the UP Alumni Chapter in Washington, D.C., shared their experiences, lessons learned, and advice on the challenges and opportunities of pursuing an international career.

The agenda also included a meeting with Ambassador Juan Carlos Lara Armienta, Chief of Mission at the Mexican Embassy in the United States and a law graduate of the UP’s Guadalajara campus. In addition to introducing the students to diplomatic work, he shared his career path in the Mexican Foreign Service and encouraged them to exercise public leadership with ethics, vision, and excellence.

A network that connects generations

These gatherings reflect one of our community’s greatest strengths: UP alumni who, from cities around the world, remain connected to their university and put their experience, time, and networks to work for those who come after them.

In addition to strengthening academic mobility and international education, these types of experiences allow students to broaden their professional perspectives, build new networks, and gain firsthand insight into different paths for professional development in global settings.

Thus, each International Week also becomes an opportunity to experience a sense of belonging to UP beyond our borders and to see that, wherever there is a UP alumnus, there is the possibility of building a bridge to future generations.

A community that stays close, opens doors, and creates more opportunities. That, too, is what it means to be a UP alumnus.
