A world of lies: UP reflects on the digital era

Mexico City, April 22, 2024 - In a world in which information is violated by different agents that jeopardize its veracity, it is necessary to talk about the subject in order to be informed and recognize what is true and what is not. It is for this reason that the School of Communication of the Universidad Panamericana School of Communication held the presentation of the book A world of lies. The state of truth in times of the technological revolution, by Xurxo Torres.by Xurxo Torres.

The presentation of the book was attended by Dr. Mariano Navarro, director of the School of Communication; José Gil, journalist who has worked as head of the cultural and political sections of La Jornada and Proceso; and Xurxo Torres, journalist, communicator, writer of several books, director of the Torres y Carrera consulting firm and author of the book presented.

Between the truth and the absence of truth

To begin, Dr. Navarro reflected on the book: "this book is a generational biography, it is a reflection on society and the conditions that make necessary this coexistence, quite complex, between the truth and the absence of it". After this, he opened a dialogue among those present where the first topic to discuss was how we can see that we are in a society that suffers from attachment to the truth.

In response to this questioning, Gil spoke of how the lack of truth has come to affect our country: "post-truth is a wolf in sheep's clothing and that is how it is presented to us, as a project of justice and at the same time we realize that it is not so".

Reality management vs. reflexive journalism

As the next topic of conversation, Navarro asked those present how human action through narratives and certain professional practices of journalism condition the truth to really come out.

To this end, Torres reflected on how since the past there has been an interest in managing reality: "There has always been an interest in control, especially political and economic, in defining how reality should be (...) this withdrawal of classes is undermining our wonderful system, it is undermining it and it is doing so from our complacency, what social conscience can be generated from a lying society?

In concluding that we are in a world where lies reign, as Torres does in his book, Gil stressed the importance of journalism: "analytical journalism is very important, journalism that reflects, journalism that investigates (...) we cannot stop having the conviction to inform".

To conclude, Torres recounted the process of his Culebras project, which, together with his wife Paula Carrera through their consulting firm, Torres y Carrera, demonstrated through hard data the lack of concern about misinformation and lack of truth in Spain.
