Development Challenges and Long-Range Challenges

Mexico City, August 29, 2022.- In order to talk to the students of Ciudad Panamericana about the challenges that exist today and how to overcome them in the best way, Alejandro Díaz de León, Corporate Director of Grupo Bal and former governor of Banco de México, gave a lecture on Development Challenges and Long-Range Challenges.

At the beginning of his presentation, Diaz de Leon explained to the audience that they were facing the most important investment project of their lives: "Who do you want to be, what do you want to learn, what problems do you want to solve?" he asked his audience, and then reflected on the fact that there is not only one way to answer these questions.

Challenges to be resolved for development

Continuing with his lecture, he raised two major problems that are present in today's society and shared reflections on these challenges that we face as part of it: the lack of development and technological progress.

He reflected on the problem related to development: "when a country lacks a broadly shared vision of the future, it is not possible to have a stable present".

He then spoke about the factors that he considers necessary for a country to achieve a good level of development, such as market economies with incentives for the benefit of society, the rule of law, equality and conditions for all, efficient and sustainable allocation of resources, and economic stability.

Continuing with technological progress, he recognized this challenge as a key and differentiating issue in professional life: "we have to understand the influences in order to take advantage of the opportunities for improvement that they offer and mitigate their adverse effects". He also talked about some of the changes that such advances cause in today's economy and business and how to be prepared to receive them.

Díaz explained to the attendees how social networks can keep them separated from the opportunities generated by technological changes, since after the emergence of these, negative views and opinions have multiplied, so finding the relevant signals is more complicated: "try to be prudent, judicious and do not lose track of what should be your best response and attitude to this environment," he recommended to the audience.

Finally, he addressed the audience and reflected on how we are currently involved in a wide range of challenges and opportunities and spoke about how to carry out a life project: "do not skimp on efforts, do not hesitate to be the best professionals you can. Choose the best alternatives for your future with a long term horizon even if it implies higher costs, difficulties, work and challenges".

Likewise, he recommended not to stop learning, not to stop understanding and not to stop transforming.
