Mexico City, March 15, 2023.—Investment in education is a priority for our university and a hallmark of our institution; that is why the Universidad Panamericana held a discussion with Enrique Majós, CEO of Compartamos Banco, to discuss this important topic.
The discussion was attended by various teachers and administrators from different schools that are part of the Panamericana community. Before the discussion began, Enrique Majós addressed the group: “I have enormous respect and admiration for everyone who works in the education sector; I believe that is what truly changes a person, but also a society and a country.”
Management roles
Enrique Majós is also the CEO of Financial Services and the CEO of Fiinlab, and has held various positions within Citibank Mexico’s and Citibanamex’s Consumer Banking divisions. Although he specializes in the financial sector, he notes that much of what he has today is due to the quality education he received. That is why, together with his wife, he has sought ways to give back a little of what education has given him by supporting various groups focused on education.
To begin with, he spoke about the responsibilities that managers must fulfill within an organization: setting a direction, building and developing a team, and coordinating the team. He also explained how important it is for a leader to ensure that the team functions effectively and is prepared for any organizational changes that may arise.
After addressing these points, he explained how important an organization’s goals are: “We must gain a deeper understanding of the vision, mission, and purpose of my organization, company, or school.” He then took the perspective of a client of an educational organization and outlined the factors that should be taken into account.
The qualities he outlined to the audience were: professional training; depth of thought; and ethical and human development—two virtues he cited to explain how, when hiring someone, he focuses on their intentions and motivation, which instill confidence in him.
A parent's perspective
Once he had finished speaking as a parent, Enrique Majós spoke from his perspective as a father and also shared some important points: he emphasized the importance of children acquiring knowledge; of receiving a well-rounded education in method and discipline; and of students receiving support at school, a point at which he highlighted the importance of mental health: “You have to build solid, close, and strong relationships.”
To help attendees put his recommendations into practice, he shared the story of how his wife—who serves as a role model for him—taught him the importance of managing his time and energy effectively. He reflected on this, saying, “To perform at my best, I have to feel good, and that’s a challenge, because you have to make time and give yourself permission to do what you want for yourself.”
