According to the story behind SMART Center in the 2016-2022 strategic planning of the UP campus Mexico, the Vice Rector for Academic and Educational Innovation Dr. Teresa Nicolas, is in charge of creating and developing a student center in order to strengthen the integral formation of students and provide them with more and better competencies (soft skills).

In the process of designing the center, different student care centers in prestigious British and North American universities were visited in order to identify good practices. Based on the aforementioned visits and the study of documents on the future of education and innovation practices, a base document was developed.

After a planning period -under the Lean Startup methodology- the plan for the creation of a center that would offer extracurricular academic experiences for students was presented to the Campus Board of Directors. The plan for the new center included and enhanced some of the existing areas as well as the development of new areas and services for students.
