Mexico City, May 18, 2023.- With the objective of understanding today's challenges, the MediaLab of the School of Communication of the University of Mexico (SIC) organized the Universidad Panamericana held the MediaLab Summit in conjunction with one of the most recognized media in our country, Heraldo Media Group.

In the auditorium of the Panamericana, Mexico City campus, students from all majors were able to meet and talk with personalities from politics, economics, business, media, gastronomy, mental health and other areas, thus learning about the reality of the working world through the voice of these experts .

The importance of communication

At the beginning, María Cristina Mieres Zimmermann, Mexican chef and entrepreneur with training at the School of Hospitality ESDAI and creator of Gastrolabone of the most important gastronomic portals in Mexico, told the students: "it is an honor to be here (...), this event is for you to connect with leaders and experts in the field of communication and learn from their experiences and knowledge".

Subsequently, Dr. Santiago García Álvarez, rector of Universidad Panamericana, Mexico City campus, reflects on the importance of this pairing and the participation of young people today: "At the present time, in which there is enormous complexity in the world, interdisciplinary dialogue is very relevant.

Dr. Fernanda Llergo Bay also addressed the audience on the importance of communication: "The most important thing in communication is truthfulness and truthfulness is often not possible for the media, but it must be for us, we have to be selective".

The OECD and its functions

Afterwards, Dr. José Ángel Gurría, former Secretary General of the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) in charge of consolidating it as one of the pillars of global economic governance, gave a lecture on the OECD and its functions.

Mr. Gurría explained to the students the current economic climate, detailing how Russia's invasion of Ukraine has exacerbated some of the economic problems previously faced and how they affect Mexico.

To combat these problems, Gurría discussed his vision with those present: "There are solutions to all these problems, but the most important one is, first, unity to face the challenges we are having, but, above all, a rule of law to build trust."

Perseverance in journalism

Carlos Allende, host of the program Palito y Bolitas in El Heraldo, shared his experience of joining the media and how he started recording from his cell phone and uploading thanks to his efforts.

Allende recounted how his perseverance in journalism has paid off, as it has given him the opportunity to meet important personalities in the world of politics.

In doing so, he encouraged students to follow in his footsteps: "Try it, whatever you are thinking, no matter how ridiculous it is, you never know who is on the other side of the screen, try it."

Digital platforms and their challenges

Finally, Monserrat Rosas, a graduate of the Panamericana School of Communication and director of Institutional Communication at the same institution, conducted a dialogue with Majo Serrano, director of Podcast Heraldo. During this conversation they talked about the opportunities that exist in the new digital platforms and their challenges.

Throughout the discussion, Serrano told how the transition of El Heraldo to digital media has been and gave recommendations to students: "Find the topic you want to talk about, it does not have to be the same as everyone, you look for your voice, look for what interests you, you will find people who share the same passion as you".

During the MediaLab Summit the students also had the opportunity to listen to a conference given by journalist Jesús Martín Mendoza, host of Heraldo Radio and Heraldo TV in Heraldo Noticias de la Tarde. Read more about this conference here.
