UP and UNAM present book Verification vs. Fake News

On December 7 was officially presented the book: Verification vs. fake news. La contienda por la veracidad de la información en la era de la postverdad, an academic work authored by the Observatorio de Medios Digitales de la Escuela de Comunicación de la Universidad Panamericana, in collaboration with the Observatorio de Medios de la Facultad de Estudios Superiores Aragón de la UNAM.

With the support of the Fondo Fomento a la Investigación of the UP, this publication stems from a research project, conducted by both institutions, which focused on analyzing the spread of false information during the 2018 presidential elections in Mexico.

Verification vs. fake news, the aim of the book

Hence, its main objective was not only to contribute to the understanding of the phenomenon arising from the proliferation of false reports, but also to help make visible the efforts undertaken at both the global and local levels to promote the verification of information.

Published by Universidad Panamericana, Mexico City campus, under the coordination of Dr. José Luis López Aguirre, this book provides readers with fundamental information to understand the origin of false notes.

It also includes guides, exercises, tutorials, multimedia resources, interviews and shared verification experiences to promote the daily work of this action.

Among the cases addressed by the authors, Verificado 2018 stands out, a collaborative journalism initiative in which the researchers had the opportunity to participate, launching their own verification units, and to inquire into the method by interviewing the team behind the initiative.

Finally, during the presentation of the book, the researchers highlighted the current panorama of disinformation and took the opportunity to call for reflection.

Not without first inviting the university community and the general public to read this book, which can be found free of charge in both its digital and printed versions.

"In the digital era we have information at a click and in the palm of our hand; however, we are also facing the emergence of new media, channels and actors of communication, such as socio-digital networks, where rumor and lies circulate with false and manipulated events, data, photos and videos, as well as unfounded opinions," they explained.
