Latin American Logistics Simulation Contest

The Latin American Logistics Simulation Contest is a contest organized by the company FlexSim which seeks to sponsor the dissemination of operations research as a tool of great importance in solving everyday problems in logistics and production, rewarding the ingenuity and talent of the participating students.

This is the sixth time that students from the School of Engineering have participated in this competition, making us the institution that has won this contest the most times. contest in Latin America. It is worth mentioning that the School of Engineering has been participating in this contest for more than ten years.

The participating teams are made up of three students from Industrial Engineering careers, accompanied by a professor-advisor, who in this sense is Mrs. Mercedes Urzúa González, Director of the School of Engineering, from related areas (simulation, operations research, logistics, production), to test their talent in a real consulting-type case, where they make computer models that emulate the function of the service offered by a company, this in a fictitious way.

The entire contest takes place remotely, as there are contestants and teams from universities throughout Latin America, where some of the activities that take place are: the delivery of starter kits, training and question sessions, delivery of solutions, announcement of finalists, and finally the awarding of finalists is done in a face-to-face event.

"I wanted to sign up for this contest because I think it is a way in which I can deepen and analyze the operation of a company and a system itself; I think that without this I would not have been able to experience it firsthand, I take away a lot of knowledge and having been a finalist is even more incredible and valuable to me," says Alejandro.

"I really enjoy this kind of contests, I have had the opportunity to participate in other contests, but they were virtual. I think this time I will feel more recognition in person. I like to compete and this time my team were my friends and in person, so it's nice to share this with them," shares Brenda.

The solutions will be evaluated by a panel of experts in simulation (from Mexico, Chile and Colombia), according to criteria made known to the teams. The students representing Universidad Panamericana were Alejandro López Negrete, Brenda María del Rosario Lam Bustamante and Rodrigo de Luna Ríos, eighth semester engineering students who were part of the BRAXSIM team.

"The truth is that I was very hesitant to participate or not, but in the end I was encouraged more by the experience, the no I have already won, all that could happen was to have experience and more knowledge in my favor. I think that even if it goes badly, you can't regret it. Being a finalist can open doors for me", Rodrigo expresses.

Likewise, the students recognize the high level and support that the institution has to prepare its students; they especially highlight the support that their tutor, Mrs. Mercedes, gave them in preparing them for the competition, as well as the knowledge and support that the Faculty has in providing them with the use of this software.

"For me it is very valuable to see how students not only participate in this contest in which they test their skills, but it is also a way to complement their education so that they can take away the best possible experience from the University," shares Mtra. Mercedes
