Why are women in STEM key to the future, and what role do universities play?

Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes; March 18, 2026.—Women’s participation in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics remains a global challenge. At the Universidad Panamericana, experts are analyzing the causes of this gap and the strategic role of higher education in closing it.

In a world where technological innovation drives economic and social development, the participation of women in STEM fields (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) has become a priority. However, despite progress in some areas, the gender gap persists, particularly in engineering and technology.

What is the current gender gap in STEM?

In fields such as engineering and technology, women account for about 30% of the workforce, while men make up approximately 70%. Although there has been a steady increase in the number of women in scientific fields, this ratio has remained relatively stable in Mexico and internationally.

According to Mercedes Urzúa González, M.A., dean of the School of Engineering at the Universidad Panamericana Aguascalientes Universidad Panamericana , these advances have been uneven:

“The proportion of women in science has grown significantly; however, in technology, engineering, and mathematics, we continue to see a significant gap that has not changed substantially in recent years.”

Why are there so few women in engineering and technology?

The low participation of women in STEM is not solely due to academic factors, but also to cultural and social factors that begin to influence them from an early age. The lack of female role models, gender stereotypes, and the perception of these fields as predominantly male spaces directly influence career choices.

Furthermore, in the professional sphere, these barriers are even more pronounced. Working conditions, the challenges of balancing work and personal life, and the low representation of women in leadership positions limit women’s career advancement in these sectors.

“Women account for less than 10% of leadership positions, which limits the visibility of role models who could inspire new generations, the expert notes.

Why is it important to encourage more women to pursue careers in STEM?

Women's participation in STEM is not just a matter of equity, but a strategic necessity. Gender diversity leads to better solutions, drives innovation, and enables us to respond more effectively to global challenges.

It is estimated that by 2050, 70% of jobs will require STEM skills, so closing this gap will be key to economic and social development.

Including more women in these fields helps to develop more comprehensive solutions by incorporating diverse perspectives into scientific and technological decision-making.

What role do universities play in closing the gender gap?

Universities play a key role in transforming this reality. From academic education to community engagement, they have the ability to foster scientific careers and create more inclusive environments.

“Schools can either perpetuate or break down inequalities. That is why it is essential to design experiences that build confidence and a sense of belonging among women in these fields,” the dean emphasizes.

How does the Universidad Panamericana promote women's Universidad Panamericana in STEM?

Through educational programs, mentoring, and hands-on experiences, universities can encourage girls’ and young women’s interest in science and technology.

One example is the program Beautiful Patterns, launched by the School of Engineering at the Universidad Panamericana in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), which introduces girls aged 12 to 16 to the world of programming through female role models and applied learning.

Initiatives like these not only build technical skills, but also change perceptions and reinforce the idea that these fields are accessible, relevant, and necessary.

Beyond institutional policies, change requires creating environments where women see themselves as an integral part of science and technology. Establishing role models, providing academic support, and fostering confidence are key to closing the gender gap.

Finally, Dr. Urzúa issues a call to the younger generations: “Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are not just for perfect geniuses, but for curious people who want to learn. Just because a profession is dominated by men doesn’t mean we don’t belong there; it means these fields are still incomplete.”

Closing the gender gap in STEM involves not only expanding opportunities for women, but also strengthening the development of society as a whole. In this endeavor, universities have both the responsibility and the opportunity to lead the way.
