Young university students develop soft skills while enjoying chess games, which take place every Thursday in the new facilities of the Library of the Universidad Panamericana campus Guadalajara.

ZAPOPAN, Jalisco; October 27, 2022.- The Art and Culture department of the Universidad Panamericana campus Guadalajara and the Library received during the semester hundreds of young people in the "ArtLab de Ajedrez", a club of students for students. The club was held every Thursday at 10:00 a.m. in the new facilities of the Library, starting on Thursday, September 22 and ending with chess challenges on Thursday, November 17 of this year. The objective of this activity is to promote the development of soft skills among the students through chess, as well as to create a space for leisure among the students between classes, where they can increase their cultural knowledge about this board game, which is considered a world sport.

Luis Martin Ramos Aguilar, seventh semester student of Industrial Engineering and Business Innovation, current president of Enactus and member of the Systematization team of the Art and Culture department, was the student leader of the project, who taught the workshop and accompanied the students during eight sessions. Luis commented: "Since I arrived at the university I looked for a way to carry out a chess workshop and it was a great achievement to achieve this goal before going on exchange to Spain, I have been fond of this sport since high school, where I was taught by chess-loving teachers. They encouraged me to participate in several tournaments and later they invited me to organize them".

In addition, the Chess ArtLab has been a meeting point for professors from the Engineering and Business Schools, who share with the students the same love for chess. The attendees not only spent enjoyable moments, but also had the opportunity to learn more about this sport and for those who already had knowledge about it, they were able to reconnect with their skills and feed their minds with new strategies. It is expected that this project will continue next year, duplicating the success it has had.

As we know, chess can be interpreted as a created art. On the board, three essential spheres of human culture are combined: science, sport and art, where the games are played through creative expression. On the other hand, we have a very important factor, such as the pieces. These pieces have a design, which has served as a stimulant for artistic work. The evolution of the pieces marks the importance of chess in art and culture. The cultural influence and the artistic context were determining factors to shape this millenary game that has united and created bonds between human beings all over the world.
