Aguascalientes, Aguascalientes; March 20, 2026.— College sports are a fundamental pillar of students’ well-rounded education. In this context, the Universidad Panamericana Aguascalientes campus is celebrating the achievement of Rodrigo González de Alba, a civil engineering student, who for the second consecutive year has been named a member of the Mexican National Archery Team, establishing himself as one of the country’s most outstanding college athletes.
Discipline and perseverance: the key to success
With more than 12 years of experience in archery, Rodrigo has built a solid career based on discipline and perseverance.
As part of his athletic career, the student has participated in various tournaments, both at the national level through the National Student Sports Commission for Private Institutions (CONADEIP) and the National Council for Sports in Education, A.C. (CONDDE), as well as in Pan American and world championships in countries such as Canada, Spain, and Ireland.
After having been a member of the national team last year, he now faces new international challenges, including competing on the World Cup circuit in countries such as China, Turkey, and Spain, as well as the Central American Games, scheduled for late July.
“Our goal this year is to win the Central American Games,” he says.
A highly competitive process
The path to making the national team has not been easy. Rodrigo explained that the selection process consists of multiple elimination rounds at the national level:
“It was a four-stage process. The first stage took place in Yucatán with 16 participants from all over Mexico; then the field was narrowed down to 8 participants at CONADE, and finally 4 were selected—those of us who traveled to World Cups and international competitions,” he reports.
Thus, the men’s compound archery team of the National Archery Team consists of Rodrigo González, Sebastián García, Máximo Méndez, and Juan del Río; Rodrigo is the only member representing the National Institute of Physical Education and Sports ( Universidad Panamericana ) and the state of Aguascalientes.
Behind this achievement lies a strong support network. Rodrigo acknowledged the vital role played by his coach, Rodolfo González—who is also his father—noting that his support has been crucial throughout his career and that their achievements are shared.
“I think Rodrigo’s best quality is that he never gives up… he’s extremely competitive,” his father says.
High-performance training requires a rigorous routine that combines physical conditioning, technique, and mental focus, in addition to the demands of college academics, which calls for discipline, organization, and commitment.
A leader in college sports
The growth of archery at the University of the State of San Luis Potosí ( Universidad Panamericana ) has established the institution as a leader in this sport at the university level. Luis Enrique Rejas, from the Sports Department, emphasized that this progress is the result of a collaborative effort among coaches, students, and the institution itself.
“These achievements encourage us to continue supporting and growing; through archery, we can continue to change students’ lives,” he says.
He also pointed out that, for a sport that hasn't been around for very long, it has had a huge impact both nationally and internationally.
