The role of the teacher in the age of artificial intelligence: technology with a human face

Mexico City, May 15, 2025. At Universidad Panamericana, every Teacher's Day we celebrate not only the work of our professors, but also their transformative vocation. This year, we do so by recognizing their fundamental role in a stage of profound educational evolution: the integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in university teaching.

The impact of AI is already a reality in our classrooms. The irruption of technologies such as ChatGPT, Gemini, ELAI and educational environments like Blackboard Learn Connect UP (the new platform that replaces Moodle) are changing the way classes are planned, feedback is given, content is created and learning is personalized. But in the face of all these advances, one certainty remains: the true differentiator in the educational process remains the teacher.

The new value of the teacher

In this new digital scenario, the role of the teacher is not weakened: it is redefined. More than a repository of knowledge, he/she becomes a mentor, facilitator and designer of meaningful learning experiences. mentor, facilitator and designer of meaningful learning experiences..

The implementation of Blackboard Learn Connect UP at our university reflects this change. This platform incorporates artificial intelligence-powered functionality that allows for automated rubrics, question banks, multimedia content insertion, real-time academic progress monitoring, and more.

However, none of these functions is meaningful without the critical, ethical and pedagogical intervention of the teacher, none of these functions is meaningful without the critical, ethical and pedagogical intervention of the teacher..... For this reason, at Universidad Panamericana we accompany this transformation with continuous training, specialized resources and training spaces so that our teachers not only know the tool, but also use it with purpose.

Personalization of learning with human criteria

One of the greatest contributions of AI in education is the possibility of personalizing learning. According to Dr. Julio César Alfaro Ávilacoordinator of the Institutional Center for Innovation in Education (CIIE) artificial intelligence is profoundly transforming the educational process.

"In education, artificial intelligence is being used to enhance the student experience and personalize learning more effectively. AI facilitates content adaptation and provides timely feedback, which increases the effectiveness of the teaching-learning process."he notes..

Blackboard Learn Connect UP facilitates this process: it allows you to generate targeted discussions, enable AI conversations, automate feedback and tailor content based on the learner's profile.

But in practice, it is the teacher who sets the course. Only the teacher can interpret the needs of his or her students, offer ethical guidance, encourage critical thinking and build an environment that favors personal growth. Technology offers paths, but the teacher is the one who decides which one is worth traveling.

AI organizes data, structures content and automates responses. But it cannot inspire, listen, read between the lines, or form character.. It cannot generate community or transmit vocations.

What AI cannot do

In times of constant innovation, it is the human factor that gives meaning to learning. Universidad Panamericana professors bring precisely that: humanity, judgment and presence. Their ability to lead by example, to raise pertinent questions, to motivate and generate community remains irreplaceable.

"Integrating AI into education does not mean replacing the teacher, but empowering him. Only he or she can turn technology into an ethical, meaningful and person-centered learning experience.", says Lic. Zyanya Paola Díaz García, coordinator of Educational Innovation at the CIIE of the Universidad Panamericana, Mexico City campus.

It is the teacher who gives meaning to learningby guiding with presence, example and humanity. Their influence in the classroom cannot be replicated by any algorithm.

Significant collaboration

Today more than ever, we need an education where technology and people coexist. At Universidad Panamericana, we are committed to a meaningful collaboration between artificial intelligence and the teacher, where technology is a means and not an end; a tool to empower, not to replace.

As pointed out by Dr. Teresa Nicolásdirector of the CIIE: "Technology is becoming an essential ally in overcoming geographic and socioeconomic limitations. The expansion of online education and technological tools opens up new possibilities to reach a wider and more diverse audience.".

On Teacher's Day, we celebrate those who, with their daily dedication, make education with a human face possible. Universidad Panamericana reaffirms its commitment to academic excellence, knowing that it is our professors, with their leadership, vocation and example, who sow the seeds of knowledge, forming not only professionals, but people capable of transforming the world.
