Aguascalientes, Ags. February 15, 2023.- With more than 30 years in the world of lighting, Alvaro Nieva Montes de Oca, professor of the School of Architecture at our school in Aguascalientes, has been working in the field of lighting for more than 30 years. Panamericana campus Aguascalientes, stands out for his extensive experience in the world of architectural lighting, both nationally and internationally.

Mechanical and Electrical Engineer from the Universidad de la Salle, Master in Electronics from the Philips International Institute of Electronics (Philips). Philips International Institute in Eindhoven, The Netherlands, and Master in Architectural Design at the Autonomous University of Aguascalientes, Montes de Oca has carved a career and experience abroad, as well as professor of the postgraduate course in Energy Efficiency at Universidad Panamericana, Bonaterra campus, with the subject of Lighting for 10 years, as well as at the Autonomous University of Aguascalientes.

"Lighting is the union between engineering and architecture, that's why I am an engineer and then I studied architecture," he expresses.

Career Path

For more than 26 years, Álvaro Nieva has been creating and directing his own lighting office, Nieva Iluminación, developing projects in the states of Aguascalientes, Zacatecas, Coahuila, Guanajuato, Jalisco and Mexico City.

Master Álvaro Nieva has worked on a great diversity of projects in the state of Aguascalientes, among them, he has been in charge of the fountain of the Virgin of the Assumption, Plaza Fundadores, the illumination of the Cathedral, San Marcos and the first version of the Bicentennial Bridge.

In other states, a project that has stood out has been the illumination of the Eden Mine in Zacatecas, an event that won an international award, the 2007 "Edwin F. Guth" Prize of the IESNA (International Institute for the Study of the Environment and Natural Resources). IESNA in Arizona, USA.

Soon after, he was in charge of illuminating the public areas and dressing rooms of the Victoria Stadium and the Alberto Romo Chavez Baseball Stadium. Soon after, his work at the National Museum of Death led him to integrate another international award, the 2010 Merit Award from the IESNA, in Canada.

"We all need light, the truth is extremely important for architecture, what's the point of having a very beautiful building if it doesn't have lighting? Light is fundamental to show a building," he emphasizes.

He has participated in various lectures, seminars and lighting conferences in countries such as Mexico, the United States, Argentina and Brazil.

"Thanks to light we can create ambiance, trigger feelings," he says.
