Students from the University of the Andes ( Universidad Panamericana ) excelled at the 7th Innovation Marathon (MIP) held at the Pontifical Catholic University of Rio Grande do Sul (PUCRS) in Porto Alegre, Brazil, from September 10 to 13.
The event brought together 191 students from 10 universities in Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, and Mexico to design creative solutions focused on three areas: Smart Cities, Regenerative and Sustainable Economy, and Responsible Innovation in Health.
UP Promotes University Talent in International Innovation
The Universidad Panamericana, through the Pan-American Entrepreneurship Hubs at its Guadalajara, Mexico City, and Aguascalientes campuses, encouraged the participation of 13 students, who worked in multidisciplinary teams.
The program included workshops and specialized mentoring sessions that fostered creativity, critical thinking, intercultural collaboration, and entrepreneurial training.
Winning Projects by UP Students
First Place in Responsible Innovation in Health and Global Award:
Regina Duarte Serrano and her team presented Mental Guard, a smartphone app that monitors the activity of people with mental health issues and alerts specialists to prevent serious crises, including suicide attempts.
Second place:
Emma Rojas Sánchez and Óscar Yahir Riquelme Martínez were recognized for SYNAPSA, a decentralized medical data management system for neurological diseases such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s.
The tool uses voice analysis algorithms and speech patterns to speed up diagnoses and detect the early onset of Parkinson's disease.
An event with international impact
The 7th edition of the Innovation Marathon in Brazil fostered a valuable cultural and academic exchange among Latin American students, establishing itself as an international and multidisciplinary platform for innovation with social and technological impact.
