Mexico City, August 31, 2026.— Game theory and artificial intelligence converge in one of the most dynamic fields of research in the applied sciences. At this intersection of disciplines, the University of Bonn hosted the Games and Artificial Intelligence Multidisciplinary Summer School 2026 (GAIMSS’26), an event that brought together specialists in mathematics, economics, computer science, and operations research.
Among those in attendance was Daniela Medrano Gutiérrez, a professor and researcher in Applied Mathematics at the National Autonomous University of Mexico ( Universidad Panamericana ) and currently a doctoral student at Rice University, whose participation represented Mexico in a top-tier academic setting.
About GAIMSS’26
GAIMSS’26 brought together researchers and students in game theory from disciplines such as mathematics, computer science, operations research, and economics. The event, co-organized by ECONtribute, took place at the Hausdorff Center for Mathematics at the University of Bonn and included a three-day summer school and a two-day workshop.

The summer school featured three specialized courses taught by distinguished scholars:“Applications of Geometry to Economics in Auction Theory and Beyond,” taught by Professor Elizabeth Baldwin (University of Oxford);“Strategic Queuing,” taught by Professor Marco Scarsini (Luiss University); and“Mechanism Design with Inspection,” taught by Professor Rakesh V. Vohra (University of Pennsylvania).
During the workshop, recent research was presented on optimization, learning through games, market design, auctions, online algorithms, equilibrium, networks, and decision-making under uncertainty.
An enriching experience at GAIMSS’26
Ms. Medrano Gutiérrez is currently in her second year of a Ph.D. program in Computational Applied Mathematics and Operations Research at Rice University, where she works with Dr. Sebastián Pérez-Salazar on problems involving decision-making under uncertainty and online optimization. Her participation was facilitated by Dr. Felipe Garrido-Lucero, a professor and researcher at the Université Toulouse Capitole and a member of the GAIMSS’26 organizing committee.

“I was particularly motivated by the close connection between the topics of GAIMSS’26 and my doctoral research,”, the researcher notes. “The main benefit of my participation was broadening my perspective on game theory and mechanism design, learning about current research tools and questions, and exchanging ideas with specialists and young researchers from different institutions and disciplines, ” she adds.
Among the most memorable experiences was the lecture by Professor Roberto Cominetti, titled “Faster than Banach–Picard?”: “I found his creative way of communicating complex mathematical ideas particularly memorable. One of the moments I enjoyed most was when he explained how a certain polynomial arose from the interpretation of a chase scene between Road Runner and the Coyote. Examples like this show that mathematical rigor can also be conveyed in an intuitive and accessible way.”
Sharing Knowledge at the UP
For Daniela, this international experience also represents an opportunity to strengthen her academic ties with the Universidad Panamericana. “I’d like to teach online courses related to mathematical economics, linear and integer programming, sequential decision-making, and convex optimization,” she says.
“In addition to imparting technical knowledge, I’d like to introduce students to contemporary problems where mathematics, economics, artificial intelligence, and operations research intersect. I would love to serve as a research mentor for students at the School of Science at the Universidad Panamericana,” she says.

The Fundamental Role of the UP School of Sciences
Medrano, Esq., reveals that Mexico offers fertile ground for research at the intersection of game theory and artificial intelligence, with applications in resource allocation, market design, mobility, logistics, digital platforms, and decision-making. “Game theory offers tools for modeling strategic interactions, while artificial intelligence enables learning and decision-making in dynamic environments,”, she says.
He also highlights the role of the Universidad Panamericana as a center of excellence in education: “In my experience, the Universidad Panamericana ’s School of Sciences is an excellent place to study, as it combines rigorous academic standards with opportunities to build collaborative networks. During my time there, I took courses that are now essential to my doctoral research and established academic connections that have contributed to my professional development.”
The Only Mexican at GAIMSS’26
One of the most eye-opening moments for the researcher came when she realized her place at that international conference: “At some point during GAIMSS’26, I realized I was the only Mexican in the room and also one of the youngest participants.”
“It was very meaningful to be in that setting, to talk with people who are working on issues similar to mine, and to see that my questions and ideas could also contribute to the discussion,” she adds.
She also notes that she is the only Mexican student in the doctoral program at Rice University, an opportunity for which she is deeply grateful. Likewise, she encourages others to follow in her footsteps: “I want more Mexican students to believe in their ability to reach the places where new ideas are discussed, research is conducted, and breakthroughs that can transform the world emerge.”
“I am deeply proud to represent Mexico, the National Institute of Anthropology and History ( Universidad Panamericana ), and the School of Sciences at the National Autonomous University of Mexico ( Universidad Panamericana), but I don’t want to remain the only one: I hope that many more people will realize that they, too, belong here and have so much to contribute,” she concludes.
Daniela Medrano Gutiérrez’s participation in GAIMSS’26 reflects the scope of the scientific training and research conducted at the Universidad Panamericana, as well as the importance of encouraging young Mexican researchers to participate in international academic forums where mathematics, artificial intelligence, and innovation converge.
