Eli Lilly and UP sign agreement to boost research and innovation in Mexico

Mexico City, October 30, 2024.— In a ceremony marked by a commitment to academic excellence and innovation in the healthcare sector, the Universidad Panamericana and the pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly signed a general collaboration agreement that will allow both institutions to strengthen their ties and promote joint research for the benefit of Mexican society. 

The primary objective of this agreement is the implementation of academic, technological development, and innovation projectsthat reflect both institutions’ commitment to advancing science and education in the country.

The event took place at the Panamericana University’s Mexico City campus and was attended by key representatives from both institutions. Representing Panamericana University were Dr. Santiago García Álvarez, dean of the Mexico City campus; Salvador Beltrán del Río, director of Institutional Development; and Almudena Vaca Romero, Director of Strategy, Development, and Graduate Program Quality. 

Eli Lilly was represented by Perla Aceves Romero,, Director of Compensation, Benefits, and Human Resources Operations in Mexico; and Rubén Ortiz Vázquez, MBA, Executive Director of Access and Corporate Affairs for Latin America.

Strategic partnerships

In her remarks, Perla Aceves Romero emphasized the importance of this agreement as a key tool for opening up opportunities in the academic and research fields, emphasizing the shared values between Eli Lilly and the Universidad Panamericana. 

“Today we signed an agreement that marks the start of a virtuous cycle for both institutions. Our mission at Eli Lilly is to develop innovative solutions that improve people’s lives, and to do so, we need strategic partners. In Panamericana, we have found an institution that shares our ethics, excellence, and focus on patient care,”, said Ms. Aceves.

For his part, Dr. Santiago García Álvarez emphasized the Universidad Panamericana of Universidad Panamericana interest Universidad Panamericana establishing strategic partnerships with the private sector, noting that this collaboration will enable the university to strengthen its role as an agent of change in the country’s development. 

“We are convinced of the vital role that universities, businesses, and society play in Mexico’s development. This partnership with Eli Lilly, a prestigious company of global significance, will allow Panamericana to expand its contributions to corporate lectures, masterclasses, and research that will benefit our students and, consequently, society, said the university president.

Objectives and scope of the agreement

This agreement between Eli Lilly and the Panamericana establishes a strong partnership that goes beyond the academic realm, encompassing applied research and technological development projects that could lead to significant innovations for the healthcare sector

Areas of collaboration will include offering corporate lectures and conducting masterclasses , and student participation in internship programs at Eli Lilly, allowing our university’s students to to gain hands-on experience at a leading pharmaceutical company.

Furthermore, this agreement is part of Panamericana’s long-term vision to strengthen the ties between academia and industry. Salvador Beltrán del Río emphasized that “Panamericana is committed to creating opportunities where students can interact with top-level professionals and receive a comprehensive education that encompasses not only theoretical knowledge but also practical application in business and research settings”.

Innovation and Social Responsibility

Eli Lilly, founded nearly 150 years ago, is recognized worldwide for its commitment to innovation and the development of medicines that enable people to live healthier, more active lives. In Mexico, the company has been present for 81 years and continues to be a leader in the pharmaceutical industry.

“Often, the work done by universities and companies plays a significant role in a country’s progress. We are very pleased to sign this agreement with Eli Lilly and are confident that together we will contribute to Mexico’s development, especially in the field of healthcare, a sector with great potential for the future”, the rector concluded.

The signing of the agreement was met with enthusiasm by both institutions, which reaffirmed their commitment to continue working together for the benefit of society. With this agreement, Eli Lilly and the Universidad Panamericana that collaboration between academia and industry is essential to addressing the challenges of the future, contributing to the development of innovative solutions that transform social reality and promote a healthier and better-educated Mexico.
