UP celebrates 200 years of relations with the United States

Mexico City, September 6, 2022.- On the occasion of the bicentennial of the friendship between Mexico and the United States, the Universidad Panamericanathrough International Affairscelebrated the UP International Day.

The inauguration of the event was attended by Mrs. Stephanie Syptak-Ramnath, Deputy Chief of Mission of the U.S. Embassy in Mexico; Winnie Hofstetter, Acting Cultural Attaché and Araceli Partearroyo, Senior Cultural and Education Advisor, on behalf of the U.S. Embassy.

On behalf of our university were Dr. Santiago García Álvarez, Rector of the Mexico campus; Dr. Héctor X. Ramírez, Vice Rector of the Mexico campus; Salvador Beltrán del Río, Director of Institutional Development and Liliana Álvarez Tostado, Director of International Affairs. In addition to thanking Mrs. Syptak-Ramnath for her presence, Dr. Garcia said: "We are very pleased with this bilateral relationship and very hopeful that every day more Pan American students can benefit from these student exchanges with more American universities with which we have agreements and research projects.

Ms. Alvarez Tostado then said: "this sixth international day celebrated by the Universidad Panamericana, we dedicate it to the United States, for the bicentennial of diplomatic relations between the two countries and with the UP the academic relations, which will undoubtedly enhance the importance of the northern country for our students, since it has the 10 best universities in the Anglo-Saxon world".

He also indicated that for the students of our university, the international week "is the opportunity to strengthen ties with representatives of American universities and this helps our students to facilitate their exchange process".

Optimism for the future

Mrs. Syptak-Ramnath then stated, "The future of our nations depends on our young people, so we must ensure that we are creating a workforce for North America that is more united, more creative, more integrated and more capable. And when I see examples like the one at Universidad Panamericana, I am optimistic about that future."

She also thanked the Pan American for highlighting the bicentennial of diplomatic relations between the United States and Mexico: "as a U.S. diplomat who has worked all over the world, including Asia, Africa, Europe and the Arab world, I can attest that there is no more important bilateral relationship for the United States than Mexico".

He also spoke about the importance of university education between the two nations and emphasized that "cooperation between U.S. and Mexican academic institutions and the resulting academic exchanges are helping young people transform their dreams into reality to find solutions to present and future challenges."

He also noted that under the State Department' s100,000 Strong in the America program, UP students have worked with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to launch a nanosatellite to help mitigate space debris.

Thus he concluded, "Our countries and our students are not only united by a 2,000-mile border, (...), but also by our shared desire to explore the next frontier of outer space."
