UP Guadalajara promotes environmental conservation with cleanup in El Centinela Forest

Zapopan, Jalisco, May 24, 2025.– In a clear demonstration of environmental commitment and social responsibility, students and staff from the Universidad Panamericana Guadalajara Universidad Panamericana participated in the first cleanup of El Centinela Forest, an ecological event that took place on Friday, March 21.

The environmental day, organized by the Department of Social Commitment of University Life in collaboration with Bosque Urbano de Extra A.C., continued the reforestation in Zapopan previously initiated by the Universidad Panamericana. This activity is part of the institution’s educational project, which seeks to to develop leaders committed to the environment through sustainable and meaningful actions.

Reforestation and Ecological Restoration in Action

The day began at 6:30 a.m. on campus and ended at 12:00 p.m.. The team consisted of 37 participants, including 30 students and seven staff members, who headed to one of the most affected areas of El Centinela Forest, which was damaged by a fire.

During the cleanup, participants carried out forest maintenance activities: they dug holes at the base of the surviving trees, applied fertilizer and water to aid their recovery and strengthen their growth. These actions were key to protecting the ecosystem and ensuring the survival of the species planted during previous reforestation efforts.

“These kinds of activities not only help the environment, but also strengthen a sense of community and responsibility among our students,”, noted the university’s Social Engagement department.

Environmental education with a social impact

The Universidad Panamericana reaffirmed its commitment to providing a well-rounded education for its students, promoting not only their academic excellence but also their active engagement in issues of social and environmental impact.

“Environmental conservation is a shared responsibility. These experiences reinforce our institutional values and inspire our university community to live to serve,”, the organizers said.

This activity is a concrete example of how higher education can be integrated with environmental activism to create a positive and lasting impact. The experience not only benefited the natural environment, but also fostered environmental awareness among the young participants.

Preservation of El Centinela Forest: A Green Lung in Zapopan

The El Centinela Forest, located north of the Guadalajara metropolitan area, is one of the main green spaces in the municipality of Zapopan. Its preservation is vital for local biodiversity, water collection, and urban climate regulation.

The partnership between the Universidad Panamericana Bosque Urbano de Extra A.C. represents an important step toward strengthening programs for reforestation, care, and cleanup of this natural area, which faces threats such as fires, deforestation, and urban sprawl.

The event was also supported by AGA Bottling, which sponsored the team’s hydration. The collaboration with socially responsible strengthens the impact of these types of projects.

Continuous commitment

The Universidad Panamericana reiterates its commitment to environmental education, sustainability , and the development of responsible citizens. Through activities such as this, the university community acts as an agent of change in the protection of the natural environment.

The institution calls on universities, businesses, and the public to join this type of initiative, in the belief that change begins at the local level and is strengthened with every collective action.
