The ethical space within technology

Dr. Agazzi then gave a lecture entitled The ethical space within technologyIn his talk, he emphasized the need for an ethical approach to technological advances. "There is a need for a concept of duty in technology, as there is none, it does not exist. So the ethical stance within technology does not find its space. How does it coincide? Well, it is achieved first, as an intellectual space," he said.

He added that "ethics can accompany development or technological progress, because the latter has an inner force that drives it almost mechanically to seek novelties and produce".

"The moment technology produces something new, it invites to elaborate specific rules for the new unprecedented situations. And it is an important issue, especially from the moment in which technology meets the human being," he said.

He also pointed out: "Bioethics and medical ethics are important because they correspond to the fact that, among the many things that technology does, there is a very important sector that directly concerns the human being and, therefore, something that concerns the human being imposes different ways of reasoning".

For his contributions, he has been 10 times member of academies around the world, has received doctorates in several countries and is recognized as the Catholic intellectual of Europe".

He also emphasized that "the problem to achieve relations between science and philosophy lies in the challenge of establishing solid and objective arguments capable of connecting the various concrete arguments; it seems to me that this is the background that characterizes the entire work of Evandro Agazzi".
