Zapopan, Jalisco; May 30, 2024.- Students and faculty from Latin America and Spain participated virtually in keynote lectures and hands-on workshops that provided a comprehensive overview of the latest research and applications of operations research in fields as diverse as artificial intelligence, mathematical optimization and process simulation. The activities were part of the 3rd Spring School of Operations Research (EPIO) of the Mexican Society of Operations Research (SMIO), held from April 10 to 12, 2009 held from April 10 to 12 in a virtual format and hosted by the Universidad PanamericanaCampus Guadalajara as host.
The inauguration was in charge of Dr. Marta Cabo Nodar (ITAM, Mexico) president of the SMIO. The first lecture was "AI versus Optimization for locating foodtrucks of burritos norteños" by Dr. Yasmín Águeda Ríos Solís (Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Monterrey).
Some of the topics presented on the second day were "Integration of analytical stages for decision making in healthcare" by Dr. Elena Valentina Gutiérrez Gutiérrez (Universidad del Valle, Colombia) and "Increasing Efficiency in Service Companies: Simulation Solutions with FlexSim Healthcare" by Mr. Mauricio Aranda Delgado (FlexSim Mexico).
On the last day, Dr. María Belén Melián Batista (University of La Laguna, Spain) gave the lecture "Metaheuristics for solving business-related combinatorial optimization problems".
Throughout the event, different workshops were offered, such as those oriented to initiate the attendees in the use of programming languages and specialized software oriented to mathematical modeling and optimization. Other workshops offered were "Optimization problems in project scheduling" by Dr. Alfredo Segismundo Ramos Jiménez (Universidad Panamericana, Campus Guadalajara) and "Discrete Event Simulation in Arena: An indispensable tool in decision making" by Mr. Christian Paul Rojas Romero (Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos, Peru).
The Research School was created in 2022 as a space for dissemination and training for students in their final semesters at the professional level to learn about recent research and applications in the field of operations research, in addition to learning specialized techniques and tools.
