UP Guadalajara promotes ecological awareness with botanical pressing workshop

Zapopan, Jalisco, May 13, 2025In order to promote ecological awareness and reinforce the commitment to environmental education. environmental educationthe Universidad Panamericana campus Guadalajarathrough its area of Social Commitmentorganized a botanical pressing workshop in collaboration with Bosque Urbano de Extraan organization dedicated to the conservation of urban green areas.

The workshop was given by Abigail Ruiz ParraAbigail Ruiz Parra, representative of Bosque Urbano de Extra, who introduced the students to the technique of pressing flowers and leaves, a traditional practice used since the 18th century in botanical expeditions to preserve plant species through pressure and dehydration.

Preserving nature with respect

During the session, it was explained that botanical pressing is not only an artistic or scientific technique, but also an act of respect for the life cycle of plants.. It was emphasized that harvesting should be consciousavoiding cutting flowers in their reproductive stage in order to protect local biodiversity.

"The flower represents the most important moment for plant reproduction. We have to respect that, said the specialist.

Participants learned how to properly select ideal species for pressing (such as thin, dry petals) and how to build home-made botanical presses. homemade botanical presses materials, such as wood, screws and absorbent paper. Alternative methods were also shared, such as pressing flowers between books, taking care of ventilation to avoid fungus.

Pressing vs. dehydration: art and science
