IMPOSTORS: An inspiring story of identity, migration, and resilience

Zapopan, Jalisco, August 12, 2025.—The Universidad Panamericana GuadalajaraUniversidad Panamericana presented a preview of IMPOSTORes, a documentary on migration, identity, and resilience directed by Rodrigo “Rocko” Márquez, an alumnus of the School of Communication.

The event, which blended film, reflection, and university pride, moved students, faculty, and visitors with a story that challenges prejudices and honors lives marked by exile.

A true story that challenges stigmas

The documentary, whichhas been screened at international film festivals and workshops, tells the stories of Óscar, a former Milwaukee police officer who assumed the identity of his deceased cousin, and Rodolfo, a former migrant smuggler in Texas known as “Antonio Montana.”

Both served their sentences, were deported to Mexico, and now face the challenge of rebuilding their lives while dreaming of being reunited with their loved ones. Amid applause and tearful glances, the university community was drawn into a story that breaks down stigmas and celebrates the power of resilience.

“Their entire life isn’t just the adventure they had in the United States, but the process of rebuilding themselves as people in Mexico, explains Rocko, who seeks to show “the true faces of Óscar and Rodolfo” beyond their mistakes.

From a family memory to an international production

For Rocko, the issue of migration was nothing new; he had experienced it firsthand as a child, watching part of his family emigrate to the United States. “It was a very strange process of letting go… how language, culture, and the sense of identity change, he recalls.

Fate led me to discover Óscar and Rodolfo’s stories almost by chance, and with a basic camera and many hours of interviews, I embarked on an eight-year project to bring their story to the big screen, overcoming unexpected challenges such as Donald Trump’s election as president and the COVID-19 pandemic.

The journey involved not only filming in Mexico and the United States, but also participating in festivals in Panama, Guanajuato, Argentina, and Cartagena, receiving support from organizations such as Filma Jalisco and Eficine Producción, and redefining the project to adapt it to the circumstances.

“If you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans. Things never turn out the way you plan, the director reflects on the making of the documentary.

A Look at Migration Through the Lens of Resilience

In a context where migration is often portrayed through the lens of suffering or victimization, *IMPOSTORes* offers a different perspective: one of personal reconstruction and resilience. Rocko describes it as an exercise in“playing the role of their advocate, allowing the audience to discover who Óscar and Rodolfo truly are, what decisions led them to their current situation, and how they have transformed their lives in Mexico.

The alumnus attributes part of this approach to his education at the Universidad Panamericana: “At the Universidad Panamericana to organize my thoughts, to be clear about my values and principles so I know what I want to communicate,”, he says.

The production had one key element: teamwork. Susana Jáuregui, Rocko’s wife and a finance and internal audit specialist from the Panamericana University, led the budget and strategic planning.

To young people who dream of telling stories, Rocko advises: “Ask yourselves if you really want this—it’s a marathon, not a sprint. Showcase your projects, attend workshops, and never stop fighting. Time is the only thing that isn’t renewable”.

More than just a documentary: a mirror of society

"IMPOSTORes" is not just a documentary about migration: it is a mirror that reflects the complexity of identity and the ability to reinvent oneself in the face of adversity.
