From Data Science to Healthcare: UP Secures Patent for Biomechanical Analysis Using AI

Mexico City, May 18, 2026.—The Universidad Panamericana a new milestone in its research history with the granting of national patent MX/a/2022/014041 , which focuses on a smart device for real-time biomechanical gait analysis.

This innovation combines advanced biomechanics, medical technology, and machine learning algorithms to analyze human movement patterns, with applications in healthcare, sports medicine, and fitness.

A notable invention

Unlike existing solutions on the market that lack anatomical flexibility, the invention features an adjustable electronic insole made of a semi-flexible material.

This initiative is led by Dr. María De Lourdes Guadalupe Martínez Villaseñor, academic director of theMaster’s Program in Data Scienceat the Universidad Panamericana; and Dr. Hiram Eredín Ponce Espinosa, director of the CINOV (Center for Innovation and Technological Development at the Universidad Panamericana) and president of the Mexican Society of Artificial Intelligence.

The device stands out for its technical architecture:

  • High-precision sensors: five front pressure sensors for the metatarsals and one rear sensor for the heel.
  • Built-in hardware: a three-axis accelerometer and gyroscope for measuring acceleration and tilt.
  • Smart processing: A microcontroller manages data at frequencies of up to 250 Hz, transmitting it via Bluetooth to an external server.

Value applicable to the medical sector

The strategic value of this patent lies in its ability to identify complex gait patterns using AI techniques, such as support vector machines and convolutional neural networks.

As a result, the system can distinguish patterns between healthy individuals and patients with various conditions, opening up opportunities for application in:

-Medical diagnosis and rehabilitation.

-Sports medicine.

-Injury prevention.

-Physical performance assessment.
