The origin of this report was to understand how the industry evolves due to digital convergence, which led traditional media to offer their content on the Internet, as well as the emergence of new journalistic companies called digital natives. Also, and since the first publication of the DNR study, it has sought to understand the various economic, political and social challenges that influence the performance of each industry at the national level, and delves into the behavior and new consumption habits of audiences in the face of changes in the national and global environment.

Role of Dr. María Elena Gutiérrez

Since 2016, Dr. María Elena Gutiérrez, current Head of the Academy of Economics and Administration at the School of Communication, represents Mexico in the annual research of the Digital News Report. Her participation consists of coordinating the methodological application of the research and interpretation of the results to ensure that the particularities of the Mexican media environment are reflected and studied in the context of international trends in the field of digital journalism.

"My role is to participate in the various meetings with the directors and editors of the Institute to see the topics to be addressed each year; to study the issue in the Mexican case, and to do the same prior to the process of applying the survey. And once the results are available, we can go deeper and describe the characteristics of the national market, not only in quantitative terms with respect to the analysis of the results once they reach us, but also with the day-to-day analysis of what is happening in the national industry, which allows us to go deeper into the context at the time of describing the Mexican market. And in this sense, my task is to be as objective as possible, because in the global study, each country must show the particularities of the region", he said.
