Universidad Panamericana Aguascalientes: 35 Years of history and growth

Aguascalientes, Ags., January 21, 2025.— The Universidad Panamericana Aguascalientes campus, is celebrating its 35th anniversary as a key institution in the region. Since its founding in 1989, the university has been a beacon of academic excellence, becoming a benchmark for higher education in Mexico.

A story of vision and resilience

Founded through the efforts of local business leaders, the early years of the Aguascalientes campus were marked by significant challenges. Infrastructure limitations made it difficult to organize courses, but the leadership of the first president, José Romo Saucedo, was essential in overcoming these obstacles.

The Dr. Eduardo Sánchez de Alba, a pioneering professor at the institution, comments on this: “At that time, the facilities were completely inadequate and premature. That is why I believe that [José Romo] was the right rector for that difficult time at the university. Only someone like Pepe Romo, who was energetic and never let anything get him down, could move the university forward. He was a president with a lot of initiative and resilience, and that’s exactly what was needed under those circumstances”.

The merger with the Universidad Panamericana the legacy of Pope John Paul II

One of the most pivotal moments in the university’s history was its strategic merger with the Universidad Panamericana 1995. This merger did not merely represent a name change, but was a crucial step in ensuring the campus’s growth and stability at a time of economic uncertainty.

The merger allowed Bonaterra, as it was known at the time, to benefit from the prestige and accumulated experience of the Universidad Panamericana, which already had a solid reputation in Mexico City and Guadalajara.

The impact was felt immediately. With the support of the Universidad Panamericana, the Aguascalientes campus was able to stabilize its financial structure and expand its infrastructure. New buildings were constructed, laboratories were upgraded, and academic programs were strengthened, enabling the university to continue growing despite the economic challenges of the time.

Another important milestone occurred on May 8, 1990, when Pope John Paul II visited Aguascalientes and blessed the cornerstone of the campus chapel. This gesture not only marked a historic moment but also reinforced the university’s educational and spiritual mission, a legacy reflected in the sculpture of Christ that now presides over the entrance to the chapel.

Transformation and Consolidation: From Bonaterra to Universidad Panamericana

In 2006, the institution officially adopted the name Universidad Panamericana , AguascalientesUniversidad Panamericana , a change that symbolized its full integration into the network of Universidad Panamericana campuses Universidad Panamericana Mexico City and Guadalajara. This renaming represented a shared commitment to academic excellence and humanistic values, pillars that have guided the university since its founding.

Since then, the Universidad Panamericana Aguascalientes Universidad Panamericana has continued to expand and strengthen its presence both locally and internationally.
