Mexico City, August 18, 2025.— In observance of Social Worker Day, the Universidad Panamericana reaffirms its commitment to training leaders who will transform their communities.
Through projects that promote justice, inclusion, and solidarity, Panamericana, through its Social Commitment, fosters in its students an ethical and humanistic vision that extends beyond the classroom and makes a real impact on vulnerable communities.
Developing socially conscious leaders
Alejandra del Carmen Sánchez Gutiérrez, M.A., head of the Social Projects Coordination Office, emphasizes that social work at our university seeks not only to address immediate needs but also to develop socially conscious leaders.
“Through our Social Engagement department, we foster a sense of solidarity in our students to fulfill Panamericana’s vision: graduates with a sense of social responsibility who achieve happiness and fulfillment in life,”, he notes.
Through community outreach projects in vulnerable communities, students and faculty have the opportunity to learn about diverse realities, discover a meaningful purpose, and live a life of service to others.
Social Work in Eight Areas
The university promotes its social work through eight areas of focus: justice, health, inclusion, assistance, education, construction, research, and training. Among its most notable programs are:
- COLABORE, focused on the inclusion of people with disabilities.
- UP Volunteer Workshop, which provides professional training in community outreach.
- Comprehensive Community Intervention Model: a university program that aims to make an impact on vulnerable communities through multidisciplinary activities.
These projects not only have an impact on the communities they serve, but also strengthen the well-rounded education of students, who develop life skills and values such as empathy, responsibility, and social commitment.
“By participating in volunteer activities or social impact initiatives, students not only grow academically but also as individuals who are mindful of their surroundings,”, noted Ms. Sánchez Gutiérrez.
Impact Example: Project in Xochimilco
In Xochimilco, an intervention project transformed the lives of residents and volunteers, demonstrating the true impact of university social work. This is a clear example of the impact that the National Autonomous University of Mexico ( Universidad Panamericana ) has on communities, where the intervention tangibly transformed the lives of both residents and the volunteers themselves.
The Impact of Social Commitment in Numbers
In 2024, the Social Engagement division of the National Social Security Institute ( Universidad Panamericana ) made a significant impact: more than 42,000 beneficiaries, 3,607 volunteers, and 242 active projects in 23 regions across the country, supported by the collaboration of 155 partner companies and institutions. These efforts resulted in more than 865,000 hours of community service.
The annual report shows that this work not only transforms vulnerable communities but also strengthens students’ ethical, professional, and humanistic education. Thanks to the commitment of volunteers, partners, and donors, each project represents a real opportunity to bring about lasting change and build a more just and compassionate Mexico.
“Building a career focused on community development and impact is an opportunity to discover your purpose in life. The more you work for the well-being of others, the more meaning your path takes on. It’s worth giving your best to a cause that transcends,” says Ms. Sánchez Gutiérrez.
Commitment to the Future
With an eye toward the future, the Social Commitment program at the Universidad Panamericana views its social work as a space for innovation, research, and interdisciplinary collaboration.
The challenge is clear: to strengthen partnerships with civil society, the public and private sectors, and to engage students as key players in bringing about ethical, creative change centered on human dignity.
