First UP Chess Tournament: The Intellectual Art for Brilliant Minds

Zapopan, Jalisco; July 21, 2023.— On Saturday, May 13 , 2023, the first UP Chess Tournament was held at the Universidad Panamericana Guadalajara Campus, with nearly fifty players from various universities across the state participating.

Organization

The tournament was organized by the university’s Department of Art and Culture and exceeded all expectations for the project by attracting a diverse group of players who spent an entire morning immersed in the game of chess.

The matches were played between teachers, college students, and high school seniors. Notable among the participants was Paula Sofía Hernández, who holds a title from the International Chess Federation (FIDE) and is a member of the Mexican Chess Olympic Team. Another notable participant was José de Jesús García Espinoza, a four-time national chess champion.

Recognition for La Panamericana

During the event, interviews were conducted with the most prominent participants as well as special guests, who praised the hosts from the Universidad Panamericana for welcoming them to impeccable facilities, for their professional organization, and, above all, for the spirit of service that so distinguishes this institution. It is worth noting that the staff consisted of students from various UP degree programs who, in addition to their academic workload, are part of the Art and Culture team developing cultural projects.

Jesús García Espinoza takes first place

After witnessing such great sportsmanship, it was time to recognize the top three finishers of the day: Jesús García Espinoza (1st place), Bryan Axel Cortés Godoy (2nd place), and Paula Sofía Hernández (3rd place), who said they are already looking forward to a second edition.

We appreciate the participation of the Jalisco university community and the prominent figures who represent Mexico in this sport. Without a doubt, the Universidad Panamericana to promote activities that foster creativity and strategic thinking.
