Energy sustainability is a challenge of the present, not the future

In observance of World Earth Day, Diego Larrondo Montalvo, director of the Bachelor’s Degree Program in Energy Technology Engineering, noted that energy sustainability is one of the major challenges facing the world today, both in Mexico and globally.

The scholar emphasized that the challenge is not merely to adopt clean energy, but to do so without compromising the stability of the systems that underpin daily life.

“The big challenge is to make the transition to renewable energy without jeopardizing the availability of resources. A single day without electricity or fuel can bring society to a complete standstill,” he explained.

Energy, Development, and Daily Life

The expert emphasized that there is a direct link between energy availability and economic growth. The greater the access to reliable and affordable energy, the greater the opportunities for people to develop.

However, he also emphasized that sustainability does not depend solely on major structural changes, but on individual decisions. Actions such as reducing car use for short trips, choosing alternative modes of transportation, or moderating consumption have a significant cumulative impact.

“It’s a mistake to think that if I’m not 100% sustainable, then I’m not sustainable at all. Small actions do matter, and together, they bring about real change, he said.

Renewable Energy in Mexico: A Growing Reality

Far from being a promise for the future, renewable energy is already a reality. Mexico has significant potential for solar and wind energy, and their economic viability has been proven.

However, the scholar noted that one of the main challenges is the modernization of the energy infrastructure, which requires investment, technological innovation, and effective public policies.

Sustainability: A Shared Responsibility

One of the main mistakes when discussing sustainability, he explained, is to assume that the responsibility lies solely with governments or large corporations.

Social responsibility isn’t limited to those who cause the problem. We’re all part of the solution, he pointed out.

In this regard, he emphasized that individual actions, even if they seem small, contribute to a collective impact that should not be underestimated.

The Role of Universities and Young People

Educational institutions play a key role in shaping agents of change. According to Mr. Larrondo, universities should not only train competent professionals but also foster an active social and environmental consciousness.

“Young people have the drive to bring about change. Universities should support them and connect them with real-world projects where they can make a difference,” he explained.

Earth Day: A Call to Action

In the context of Earth Day, the message is clear: sustainability is not a future option, but an immediate necessity.

“We do not inherit the Earth from our ancestors; we borrow it from future generations. What we do today is an investment in the future,” he concluded.
